For over 10 years Colobus Conservation (CC) has provided veterinary care for orphaned or injured primates by having an onsite clinic and our classroom has taught thousands of school children of the importance of protecting the endangered colobus monkeys and their forest habitats. Now, as the organization is moving to a new site, we need to raise USD 17,000 to dismantle the classroom and rebuild it on the new site and provide a modern veterinary clinic by buying and fitting out a 20ft container.
The owner of the 1-acre site currently rented by CC has given us notice to vacate the premises so it can be redeveloped. Fortunately, CC has secured the 15-year lease of a 5-acre plot of virgin coastal forest. However, the new site has no buildings on it and hence CC needs to provide these. Luckily some containers converted into offices have been donated but in order to continue our primate welfare and conservation activities we still need to provide a veterinary clinic and a classroom.
The existing wooden 10m x 6m classroom is a prefabricated design. Hence it can be dismantled, moved to the new site and re-erected on a suitable foundation. And a perfectly adequate secure veterinary clinic can be provided by buying a good quality 20ft container and adding doors and windows and installing stainless steel work surfaces and a sink plus shelving and cupboards and appropriate lighting, ceiling fans and electrical power points.
This appeal is not just about moving a classroom and buying and fitting out a 20ft container - it's about securing a future for environmental conservation learning and ensuring that much needed quality primate welfare care can continue.
