Deadly flooding in Central and Southern Mozambique has killed more than 100 people and displaced hundreds of thousands. Flooding is damaging water and sanitation systems during an ongoing cholera outbreak, and further rainfall is expected. ActionAid is responding alongside local partners to meet urgent needs now, and to support recovery in the weeks ahead. We are prioritizing women-headed households, children, and people facing the greatest risks.
Severe flooding hit Mozambique in January after months of rain, affecting southern and central regions. Over 852,000 people were affected (392,000 displaced) with ongoing impacts to crops, livestock, and key fishing assets that are harming the livelihoods and food security of those most vulnerable. In Manhica District, where ActionAid is focusing, families have even been instructed to return, with serious protection and health risks, including for an estimated 12,000 pregnant women.
ActionAid is responding alongside local partners to meet urgent needs now, and to support recovery in the weeks ahead. We are prioritizing women-headed households, children, and people facing the greatest risks with emergency food and clean water, hygiene kits and non-food essential supplies, period products and support for women and girls, safe spaces, child protection (CP) and gender-based violence (GBV) awareness raising, and educational materials for children.
ActionAid's humanitarian approach aims to meet short term immediate needs, but also to have longer term impact by linking emergency response to sustainable recovery. Beyond immediate relief, and as always, we seek to strengthen local leadership, support women's rights and protection systems, and build community resilience to future shocks. By investing in preparedness, livelihoods, and advocacy now, communities can recover with greater equity and capacity to withstand disasters as they occur.
