Mama Amina's Story: From Trauma to Hope

When Mama Amina first arrived at the MUTIMA Psychosocial Center three months ago, she could barely speak. Her eyes were fixed on the ground, and her hands trembled constantly. She had fled her village in South Kivu with her four children after witnessing unspeakable violence during the January 2025 conflict escalation.

She shared during her recent group therapy session: "I couldn't sleep. Every sound made me jump. I thought I was going crazy. My children were scared of me because I would scream at night."

Today, Mama Amina is a different person. After 12 weeks of Cognitive Processing Therapy at MUTIMA, she smiles more often. She has started a small business selling vegetables at the local market, and most importantly, she has reconnected with her children. She says: "MUTIMA gave me back my life. Now I can be a mother again."

Mama Amina is one of over 150 people we serve daily at MUTIMA.

Your Impact in Numbers

Thanks to your generous support, the MUTIMA Center has achieved remarkable results since opening:

  • 869 trauma survivors treated in individual therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric care
  • 1,405 therapeutic sessions delivered with modern trauma treatment techniques
  • 150+ people daily now seeking help at our center
  • 142 healthcare professionals trained in mental health and psychosocial support
  • 6 districts reached through community awareness campaigns

The Crisis We're Facing

The conflict in Eastern Congo has intensified dramatically in 2025. Since January, the M23 rebel group captured Goma and Bukavu, the two major cities in the Kivu region. This offensive has displaced over 1.1 million people and created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.

Sexual violence has become a weapon of war. Cases have increased by 700% between February and March 2025. Nearly 40,000 victims were treated in North Kivu alone during 2024, and the numbers continue to rise. Women and children are especially vulnerable, with 30% of rape victims being children.

The psychological impact is devastating: depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidal thoughts are common among survivors. Without professional mental health support, these individuals cannot recover, rebuild their lives, or contribute to their communities.

How We're Responding

The MUTIMA Psychosocial Center is located in Lwiro, South Kivu province, at the heart of the conflict zone. MUTIMA means 'heart' in several African dialects, and that is exactly what we bring to our work: heart.

Our approach combines:

  • Evidence-based therapy: We use Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), adapted specifically for the Congolese context, proven to dramatically reduce trauma symptoms
  • Group and individual sessions: Survivors attend both group therapy for peer support and individual sessions for personalized care
  • Psychiatric medication: When needed, we provide psychotropic medications for anxiety, depression, and PTSD
  • Community awareness: Our radio program 'Mental Health, Peace and Biodiversity' reaches thousands across the province, fighting stigma and educating communities

Young Pierre Finds His Voice Again

Pierre was only 14 when armed men attacked his school. He witnessed terrible things that day. For months, he stopped speaking entirely. His grandmother brought him to MUTIMA, desperate for help.

Marie, one of our psychologists, says: "At first, he just sat in our group sessions. But slowly, week by week, he started to participate. Now he even helps other children who arrive at the center. He has become a symbol of hope for us all."

Pierre recently returned to school. His grandmother calls it a miracle. We call it the power of professional mental health care.

Current Challenges and Urgent Needs

The demand for our services has tripled since the conflict escalated. We are now serving over 150 people daily - all of them having experienced horrific trauma. Many walk for hours to reach us because MUTIMA is the only specialized mental health center in the region.

We urgently need support to:

  • Maintain psychiatric medication supplies (€500/month) - many patients are running out
  • Pay our team of psychologists (€400/month per psychologist) who work tirelessly
  • Provide basic food for children in therapy groups (biscuits and juice, $50/month)
  • Establish mobile clinics (€1,500/month per clinic) to reach remote areas
  • Cover operational costs (transport, internet, supplies - €600/month)

Why Your Support Matters

Mental health saves and dignifies lives. Mental health is hope.

Without support, trauma survivors cannot reach their full human potential. They cannot contribute to building peace, protecting the environment, or developing their communities economically. They cannot live full and happy lives.

But with your help, they can heal. Like Mama Amina, who now supports her family again. Like Pierre, who returned to school. Like the 150 people who walk through our doors every single day, seeking healing and finding hope.

The Congolese people have given their resources to the world for generations - gold, cobalt, diamonds, coltan that power our phones and computers. Now it is time to give back. It is time to invest in their future.

"Everything done in the world is done out of hope." - Martin Luther

Thank you for being part of this hope. Thank you for healing hearts in Congo.

#YourHeartForCongo

With gratitude,

The MUTIMA Team
