IsraAID has deployed an emergency response team to Myanmar following the devastating earthquakes on Friday, 28 March. Over 1,700 people were killed and 3,500 more injured. We are conducting a rapid needs assessment, prioritizing access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for affected communities. The team includes experts in emergency response and WASH with decades of combined experience responding to earthquakes across the globe.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock. More than 1,700 people were killed, and thousands more are injured or missing. Before the earthquake, 19.9 million people needed humanitarian aid due to ongoing civil conflict. They now face another unfolding crisis. Essential infrastructure is destroyed, disrupting critical health, energy, & sanitation services. Thousands are displaced, sleeping in open spaces due to the damage & fear of aftershocks.
IsraAID is partnering with local actors and international aid agencies to provide urgent relief to vulnerable communities. We are distributing essential NFIs, and initial programming will focus on restoring access to safe WASH infrastructure. This is IsraAID's third emergency response in Myanmar, following Cyclone Nargis in 2008 and major floods in 2015. We also have extensive global experience delivering critical aid after earthquakes, including in Morocco, Turkiye, Nepal, Indonesia, and Japan.
IsraAID is committed to supporting community resilience and implementing sustainable, community-led solutions to humanitarian crises. Our emergency response team in Myanmar will equip local communities to leverage their own strengths to recover, rebuild, and reduce the risk of future disasters. We will stand by them for as long as it takes.
