An instrumental support to access to justice

By Muna Pokharel | LM&E Officer

It is quite hard for violence survivors of Humla District of violence survivor due to child marriage to stay safe when they do not have property and their own money to survive. If the violence occurs, and a woman decides to report against abuse by her family or any other, she loses her home and secured place and needs a safe place to stay, food to eat and travel expenses to reach the police station and court.

To support these survivors, Nepal Austria Partnership Organization (NAPO) based on Humla district received grant of NRs 500,000.00 (USD 3,458.00) to conduct a weekly Radio Program to make the violence survivors aware and informed about their rights and safe spaces. The program was planned for six months on Radio Karnali Awaaz and Radio Kailash in Humla district and support to Safe House for logistics for survivors.

These radio stations conducted the talk programs to teach the community about different types of violence and the legal rights women have. The programs particularly covered: what is called violence, types, existing laws, and service providers' information, the importance of One Stop Crisis Management Center (OCMC) and duties of elected bodies. These programs explained how to get help from service providers and reminded local elected leaders that they are responsible for protecting survivors. By sharing this information, the radio helped women to understand the step- by- step process of seeking justice and finding safety.

In addition to the radio broadcasts, NAPO supported to violence survivor through its Safe House for those in need of safety and other immediate support. The safe house provided survivors a secure place for women and children to stay after reporting their perpetrator to the authorities. During this period, 37 women and children received food, clothes and other hygiene kits, shelter, and transportation to access the justice in their way.
