With its new Level 2 status, Mwandi General Hospital (MGH) provides medical services to 100,000 people in rural Western Province Zambia. Because the hospital serves a large population in this remote, rural location, it must maintain sufficient supplies of medications, medical instruments, and other patient care resources. Constructing a new pharmacy and medical supplies center is a critical next step to assure that the hospital will always be prepared to provide patients with high quality care.
Today, the MGH pharmacy has one office and a small dispensary. It lacks a sterile compounding room, necessary for customizing medicines for specific patients. Drugs are kept in an adjacent storeroom or stored in closets in the hospital without climate control. This can affect their quality and efficacy and may cause security risks and inventory inaccuracies. The hospital's limited storage capability also restricts its ability to maintain buffer stocking of relevant resources for emergencies.
The safety and effectiveness of medications and supplies will be ensured at MGH by the new 480m2 facility that will provide 128m2 of climate-controlled storage for pharmaceuticals and 144 m2 storage for hospital operations and medical supplies. The storage spaces are designed to reduce risks of environmental damage to items, to enable easy and fast location of drugs and other medical consumables when needed, and to maintain up-to-date inventories so that adequate stocks are always maintained.
As Mwandi General Hospital's patient population grows, its ability to provide quality care for those patients will depend on providing healthcare practitioners with ready access to efficacious drugs and medical tools. The new storage facility will play a central role in assuring that the medical needs of patients are met. Because of thoughtful planning, the new building will safely and securely store the hospital's inventories of medications and other supplies now and well into the future.
