Connecting young people with nature!

By Sarah Otterstrom | Executive Director

Global Big Day birding with friends!
Global Big Day birding with friends!

Dear friend,

Your support has helped keep Junior Ranger graduates engaged in environmental service and learning. Thank you!

This past May, Junior Rangers who graduated last year participated in the Global Big Day, assisting our birding teams in identifying 134 bird species. These youth have also found other ways to contribute to their communities, including creating signage to encourage stewardship of mangroves and waterways, and participating in beach cleanups. This month, a group of students gathered for World Ocean Day, sharing posters and cleaning up the beach. We are so proud of their advocacy, made possible thanks to your past support for the Junior Ranger program.

This month, we hosted a group of students from the San Juan del Sur Day School at our Mono Bayo Reserve. Our private reserve offers students the opportunity to explore natural areas—an important experience, as southwestern Nicaragua has only one public reserve along the coast (the La Flor Wildlife Reserve).

In addition, high school students from Ostional, Nicaragua, will be planting one hundred trees in July, thanks to support from our partner Offset Alliance. Finally, in El Salvador, we are launching an exciting program in partnership with the Oriente Salvaje World Surfing Reserve (ADETCO, Save the Waves Coalition) to bring environmental education programming and service projects to 350 children in rural communities near the coast.

Thank you for helping us invest in youth so they know their value and find purpose in sustaining their natural environment.

With Gratitude,

Sarah Otterstrom
