2019 started off with volunteers of all backgrounds and ages. All were brought together with the common goal of educating the community of Jambiani. We have been continuing to serve porridge and create interactive English lessons for the nursery students in the village.
Last week was washy, washy, scrub, scrub week, where we taught the students about the importance of hygiene. We started off the week instructing them on the proper steps of brushing their teeth. You could even hear them singing our weekly theme song, “this is the way we brush our teeth, brush our teeth, brush our teeth…” as they strolled home after class.
Later in the week, we brought in bars of soap and demonstrated to the children the correct way to wash their hands. You could hear them shout “1!2!3!...20!” as they counted the seconds that they needed to rub the soap in to truly disinfect their hands.
The goals of this program are to instill lifelong habits that contribute to a healthier community and provide supplies to make the children aware of hygienic practices. Through the help of African Impact staff and volunteers, they are also able to make sure these practices are being used at home and later into their life. The end of the week, craft day, was filled with colored paper cut outs of children smiling and holding up their artwork, with clean teeth to match. All the kids, teachers and volunteers did a fantastic job and we will continue to reinforce these positive behaviors with our daily washy washy practice.
Through the generosity of our volunteers, we were able to pay for another month of porridge for our four nursery schools and give toothbrushes to the incoming Juniors class. Thank you for your ongoing support!
