Nutrition & health for 150 kids Petare, Venezuela

Febrero fue el mes aniversario de nuestra organización, 64 años activos y con presencia en Petare, uno de los barrios más grandes de América Latina. Este mes trajo consigo además de la celebración, ciertas reformas. Decidimos agrupar nuestros alumnos por edades, aunque tuvieran distintas capacidades académicas. Lo que generó una planificación de acuerdo a sus distintos niveles por salón.  La idea que se relacionen con personas con quien pudieran compartir mismos intereses, entre los que se dé una comunicación más fluida y fomentar mejores tratos entre ellos. Para esto también se realizaron talleres para tratar el tema del bulling y prevenir situaciones de discordia o mal trato entre nuestros estudiantes. En ambas escuelas se realizaron evaluaciones psicopedagógicas cuyos resultados concluyeron que 74 niños requerían atención por el departamento de psicología; 2 por psiquiatría; 29 por psicología y 28 por neurología. En vista de las dificultades de aprendizajes que presenta la población de nuestras escuelas se decidió capacitar a los docentes con talleres sobre educación especial y se generó el acompañamiento por parte del departamento de psicopedagogía para apoyarlos en su desenvolvimiento en clases y fortalecerlos en la formación de sus alumnos bajo la nueva disposición de los niveles. 

Las voluntarias, Madres Lectoras, que buscan apoyar a los niños que se están iniciando en la lectura, retomaron nuevamente su prespecialidad en las escuelas ayudadas por el voluntariado de los alumnos de V año de bachillerato del Colegio San Ignacio que acuden semanal mente. Por otro lado, ambas escuelas de OSCASI comenzaron a formar parte de la agenda ecológica del Municipio Sucre, lo que nos compromete a ser más activos en el cuidado de nuestro medio ambiente y responsables de nuestras acciones.   

En el área de salud nos dispusimos a revisar cada historia médica de los alumnos en riesgo de desnutrición, anémico y que presentan otras condiciones especiales de salud resultados de jornada de atención médica realizada en noviembre 2021 y cruzamos la información con la base de datos donde se encontraban los alumnos con discapacidades cognitivas, muchos coincidieron. La nutricionista de la organización evaluó de manera individual los casos de desnutrición moderada y severa, para descartar otra patología o condiciones asociada a esos estados nutricionales. 

También en febrero se llevó a cabo la jornada de Salud Bucal y 6 odontólogos del colegio San Ignacio, con el apoyo de Colgate-Palmolive, realizaron triaje a toda la comunidad educativa de ambas escuelas. Colgate nos apoyó con charlas de higiene bucal y nos donó cepillo y cremas dentales con las que garantizamos la limpieza bucal de nuestros estudiantes después de cada comida ingerida en la escuela.

Para el mes de marzo se celebró reunión con los Padres y Representantes de los estudiantes que habían presentado desnutrición, anemia o en riesgo nutricional, aportándoles información sobre los alimentos que sus hijos requerían consumir para garantizar una ingesta diaria ajustada a sus necesidades calóricas.

En marzo realizamos la primera jornada de vacunación de COVID-19 dirigida a nuestros estudiantes y también a miembros de su grupo familiar, así como a la comunidad en general. Y se llevaría a cabo la segunda jornada en el mes de abril.

La Dra. Eva Pérez, neuróloga y voluntaria en OSCASI, evaluó junto a otras cuatro doctoras de la misma especialidad, los casos que requieren ser atendidos por ellas. Estamos a la espera de la recepción de los informes médicos correspondientes, para dar continuidad al tratamiento de cada paciente.

Se incorporó al equipo de trabajo un psicólogo que trabaja con los alumnos y sus familias y a la vez apoya al departamento de psicopedagogía. 

Dieron inicio de los talleres de arte y oficio para los estudiantes a partir de 13 años en piñatería y festejo, depilación, manicure y pedicura, reparación y mantenimiento de computadoras, peluquería y barbería

En abril tienen lugar las mesas de trabajo del personal docente para presentar las experiencias significativas en el aula bajo la nueva estructura y de allí se genera la necesidad de modificar el formato de planificación semanal tomando en cuenta las 5 fases: contexto, experiencia, reflexión, acción y evaluación del proceso enseñanza aprendizaje. 

En mayo volvimos a realizar jornada de salud, medición talla y peso, con toma de muestras y pudimos constar mejorías en la mayoría del caso con deficiencia nutricional. En este momento estamos acercándonos al cierre del año escolar, preparándonos para dar indicadores y en preparación de nuestra tradicional Verbena.Te invitamos a acompañarnos el próximo domingo 5 de junio.

February was the anniversary month of our organization, 64 years active and with a presence in Petare, one of the largest slums in Latin America. This month brought with it, in addition to the celebration, certain reforms. We decided to group our students by age, even though they had different academic abilities. What generated a planning according to its different levels by room. The idea that they relate to people with whom they could share the same interests, between whom there is more fluid communication and better dealings between them. For this, workshops were also held to address the issue of bullying and prevent situations of discord or mistreatment among our students. Evaluations were carried out in both schools, the results of which concluded that 74 children required attention from the psychology department; 2 for psychiatry; 29 for psychology and 28 for neurology. In view of the learning difficulties presented by the population of our schools, it was decided to train teachers with workshops on special education and support was generated by the educational psychologydepartment to support them in their development in classes and strengthen them in the formation of their students under the new arrangement of levels.

The Reading Mothers volunteers, who support children who are beginning to read, once again resumed their work in schools helped by the senior class volunteers from Colegio San Ignacio who attend weekly. On the other hand, both OSCASI schools began to be part of the ecological agenda of the Sucre Municipality, which commits us to be more active in caring for our environment and responsible for our actions.

In the health area, we set out to review each medical history of the students at risk of malnutrition, anemic and who present other special health conditions, results of the medical care day carried out in November 2021, and we crossed the information with the database where it we found students with cognitive disabilities and found many matches. The organization's nutritionist individually evaluated the cases of moderate and severe malnutrition, to rule out other pathologies or conditions associated with these nutritional states.

Also in February, the Oral Health workshop was held and 6 dentists from the San Ignacio school, with the support of Colgate-Palmolive, triaged the entire educational community of both schools. Colgate supported us with talks on oral hygiene and donated a toothbrush and toothpastes with which we guarantee our students' oral hygiene after each meal eaten at school.

For the month of March, a meeting was held with the Parents and Representatives of the students who had presented malnutrition, anemia or at nutritional risk, providing them with information on the foods that their children required to consume to guarantee a daily intake adjusted to their caloric needs.

On Saturday, March 12, we carried out the first COVID-19 vaccination day aimed at our students and also members of their family group, as well as the community in general. And the second day would took place in April.

Dr. Eva Pérez, a neurologist and volunteer at OSCASI, evaluated, together with four other doctors from the same specialty, the cases that require her attention. We are awaiting receipt of the corresponding medical reports, to continue the treatment of each patient.

A psychologist who works with the students and their families and at the same time supports the education psychology department joined the work team.

We started trade workshops for students from 13 years old in piñatería and celebration, waxing, manicure and pedicure, repair and maintenance of computers, hairdressing and barbershop

In April, the teaching staff round tables were held to present the significant experiences in the classroom under the new structure, and from there the need to modify the weekly planning format is generated, considering the 5 phases: Context, experience, reflection, action and evaluation of the teaching-learning process.

In May we once again carried out a health workshop, measuring height and weight, with taking samples and we were able to see improvements in most cases with nutritional deficiency. At this time, we are approaching the close of the school year and preparing to give indicators.

Happy New Year! We wish you best in 2022 and we want to begin this year thnbaking you for your support. OSCASI began in September 2021 the first quarter of the 21-22 School Year, planning for three possible scenarios; educate through the distance modality; receive students in small groups to be served in two shifts; or to reoccupy the classrooms of our two schools by all the students and teaching staff. At that time, the teachers and workers attended workshops, which could not be held at the administrative headquarters of the organization, as had been initially arranged, due to the appearance of positive cases of COVID19 in that place. This led us to make the decision to carry out the return to classes under the second modality, with an enrollment of 162 students who started attending in small groups, always observing biosecurity measures and complying with the guidelines, previously established, in case of COVID symptoms among students, teaching staff, administrative staff or workers.

The classrooms were equipped with pedagogical and didactic material designed by our team and with an encyclopedia for each level. We received the students giving them uniforms and school supplies and their families received a bag of food and a hygiene Kit.

On October 25, 2021, the government authorities allowed us to open the kitchen service of both schools, offering breakfast, lunch and a snack every day of the week to our students, and the opportunity in who attended face-to-face classes in groups from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 m., guaranteeing the distance between them at the time of eating. In this first quarter, there were 54 effective days of kitchen service, offering 3,701 meals, returning to the quarterly average prior to the Pandemic.

The usual evaluations were carried out to diagnose the level of each grade, to establish the work strategy with each group and to determine the special cases to which more personalized support must be offered.

The Medical Sessions were held, and 146 students were evaluated by general medicine and 36 by psychology. It is noteworthy that only 8 cases of malnutrition due to deficit (4.9%) were found, this low incidence is presumed to be due to the program of feeding and opportune intervention in our schools. Short stature was found in 9 cases (5.5%) and is related to chronic malnutrition, either due to prolonged insufficient supply of nutrients, recurrent diseases, or environmental factors.

To close the quarter, a Christmas Party was held for all the children of our schools, with the presence of Santa Claus who handed out 157 toys to our students, with the participation of the community of the San Ignacio School, as well as our volunteers.

On January 10, 2022, we resumed classes, this time receiving the entire school population from 7.30 am to 12 m, organizing them within the classrooms into small groups according to their levels of understanding of the program being taught, and work outside the classroom has been greatly promoted to keep our students in contact with nature, providing them with a ventilated space to work in this time of pandemic. The parents and representatives who are delegates from each room have been encouraged to collaborate with the cleaning of the schools and support in the kitchens for the preparation of food. Student attendance currently is at 76%. We are in the preparations for the celebration of our 63rd anniversary which will be celebrated on February 21st.

¡Feliz año! Te deseamos todo lo mejor este 2022 y comenzamos agradeciendo tu apoyo. OSCASI da comienzo en septiembre 2021 al primer momento de Año Escolar 21-22, con una planificación con 3 posibles escenarios; educar mediante la modalidad a distancia; recibir a los alumnos en grupos reducidos para ser atendidos en dos turnos; o volver a ocupar las aulas de nuestras dos escuelas por la totalidad de alumnos y personal docente. Para ese momento, los docentes y personal obrero asistieron a talleres, que no pudieron llevarse a cabo en la sede administrativa de la organización, tal y como se había dispuesto inicialmente, por aparecer casos positivos de COVID19 en ese lugar.  Esto nos lleva a tomar la decisión de llevar a cabo la vuelta a clases bajo la segunda modalidad, con una matrícula de 162 estudiante, atendida en pequeños grupos, observando siempre las medidas de bioseguridad y cumpliendo con los lineamientos, previamente establecido, en caso de presentarse síntomas del virus entre los alumnos, personal docente, administrativo u obrero. 

Las aulas fueron dotadas de material pedagógico y didáctico ideado por parte de nuestro equipo y con enciclopedias para cada nivel. Recibimos a los alumnos con la entrega de uniformes y útiles escolares y además se hizo entrega a sus familias de una bolsa de alimentos y un Kit de Higiene.  

El 25 de octubre de 2021, las autoridades escolares nos permitieron abrir el servicio de Comedor de ambas escuelas, para atender a nuestros niños, niñas y adolescentes, ofreciéndoles desayuno, un almuerzo y una merienda todos los días de la semana, en la oportunidad en la que acudían a clases presenciales, atendiéndoles en grupos en el horario comprendido de 8:00 a.m. a 10:00 a.m. y de 10:00 a.m. a 12:00 m., garantizando el distanciamiento entre ellos al momento de comer. En este primer momento pedagógico fueron 54 días efectivos de servicio de comedor, ofreciendo 3701 comidas, retomando el promedio trimestral previo a la Pandemia. 

Se realizaron las evaluaciones de costumbre para diagnosticar el nivel de cada grado, para establecer la estrategia de trabajo con cada grupo y determinar los casos especiales a los cuales hay que ofrecerles un apoyo más personalizado.

Las Jornadas Médicas se llevaron a cabo y fueron evaluados por medicina general 146 estudiantes y por psicología 36. Es de destacar que sólo se encontraron 8 casos de malnutrición por déficit (4,9%), esta baja incidencia se presume que se deba al programa de alimentación e intervención oportuna que se lleva en las escuelas. La talla baja fue encontrada en 9 casos (5,5%) y se relaciona a desnutrición crónica, bien sea por aporte insuficiente de nutrientes prolongado en tiempo, enfermedades recurrentes o por factores ambientales.

Como cierre del Primer Momento Pedagógico se realizó una Fiesta de Navidad para todos los niños de nuestras Escuelas, con la presencia de San Nicolás quien entregó 157 juguetes a nuestros estudiantes, contando con la participación de la Comunidad del Colegio San Ignacio, así como de nuestro Voluntariado.

El 10 de enero de 2022 reanudamos las clases, esta vez atendiendo a la totalidad de la población escolar, organizándola dentro de los salones en pequeños grupos según sus niveles de comprensión del programa que se imparte y se ha promovido mucho el trabajo fuera del aula para mantener en contacto de nuestros estudiantes con la naturaleza, procurando para ellos un espacio ventilado para trabajar en este tiempo de pandemia. Los padres y representantes que son delegados de cada salón se han animado, en este comienzo del segundo momento paragógico, a colaborar con la limpieza de las escuelas y apoyar en las cocinas para la elaboración de alimentos. La asistencia de alumnos en este momento es de 76%. Nos encontramos en los preparativos para la celebración de nuestro aniversario número 63 que se cumplirá el 21 de febrero.
