Summary

In rural Uganda, over 23,000 grandmothers are raising more than 92,000 orphaned and vulnerable children, many affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty. Nyaka empowers these grandmothers with microloans, training, healthcare, and support networks so they can provide stable, nurturing homes. With your help, these resilient women become community leaders, improve household income, and ensure the children in their care can learn, grow, and thrive.

Challenge

In Uganda, HIV/AIDS and poverty have left thousands of children without parents. In rural areas, grandmothers, often widowed and living on less than a dollar a day, take on the role of primary caregivers. While deeply committed, they often lack the income, healthcare, and support needed to raise children. Without help, both generations face ongoing poverty and limited opportunities.

Solution

Nyaka supports grandmothers through micro-loans, training, healthcare, and peer support groups. These women use small loans and business skills to grow income-generating activities, improve food security, and provide for their families. Nyaka also offers medical care, home visits, and counseling. With this support, grandmothers become confident, self-reliant caregivers who raise healthy, educated children.

Long-Term Impact

When grandmothers are empowered, entire families and communities thrive. Over time, Nyaka's model has helped thousands of households rise above extreme poverty, with incomes more than tripling since baseline. Today, 95% of children under their care are in school, and household wellbeing continues to improve. The long-term impact is generational-grandmothers pass on stability, education, and resilience that uplift children and break the cycle of poverty for good.
