Project Report | Mar 10, 2025
Empowering youth about marine conservation

By Maisie Mayne | Fundraising intern

To our donators,

Oceans in Motion is a flagship outreach program based in Cape Town, South Africa, dedicated to fostering marine conservation awareness among under-resourced township youth. Despite their proximity to the ocean, many of these young individuals have never experienced it firsthand. The program aims to engage 80,000 young people annually, cultivating youth ambassadors who will advocate for ocean preservation within their communities. This report provides an update on the program's progress and its impact over the past five years.

Program Achievements

1. Expansion and Reach - Since its inception, Oceans in Motion has significantly expanded its outreach efforts. In 2018, the program reached 53,329 children. By the financial year ending February 2024, the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s education department, now known as Ocean Campus, had engaged 70,000 children across the Western Cape. The current fiscal year projects an outreach to 100,000 children, reflecting a substantial increase in engagement and program effectiveness.

2. Innovative Educational Approaches - The program employs a mobile aquarium, bringing live marine animals directly to schools. This hands-on approach allows students to interact with marine life, fostering a tangible connection to ocean ecosystems. The curriculum aligns with the South African CAPS (Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements), ensuring that lessons complement existing educational standards while introducing marine conservation concepts.

3. Community and Youth Empowerment - Beyond classroom engagement, Oceans in Motion emphasizes community involvement. By creating youth ambassadors, the program empowers young individuals to lead conservation initiatives within their communities, promoting sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. This peer-led approach enhances the program’s reach and effectiveness, as messages resonate more deeply when delivered by trusted community members.

While the program has made significant strides, challenges remain. Reaching inland schools, where students may have never seen the ocean, requires additional resources and logistical planning. The program aims to address this by expanding its mobile units and developing virtual reality experiences to simulate ocean interactions. Additionally, securing sustained funding is crucial to maintain and grow the program's impact.

Oceans in Motion has demonstrated remarkable progress in marine conservation education among under-resourced youth in Cape Town. By expanding its reach, employing innovative teaching methods, and empowering youth ambassadors, the program contributes significantly to fostering a generation committed to preserving our oceans. Continued support and investment in such initiatives are essential to ensure the long-term health of marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all donors, partners, and community members who have supported Oceans in Motion. Your contributions have been instrumental in shaping the environmental stewards of tomorrow and safeguarding our oceans for future generations.
