Ocean in Motion

By Action Change Team | Project Leader

When our Oceans in Motion van pulls up to a school—its colorful artwork gleaming on solar panels—it’s more than just a vehicle. It’s a doorway to wonder. This past term, we reached over 750 grade4 to 6 learners across the Cape Town region, bringing live marine creatures—sea stars, sea urchins, anemones—into classrooms where many children had never seen the ocean beyond postcards allafrica.com+11blog.suzukimarine.co.za+11aquarium.co.za+11.

I remember visiting a class where most hands stayed down when asked, "Who’s seen a starfish?" But within minutes, that silence was replaced by excited gasps and whispered questions as the van’s living marine ambassadors made their debut aquarium.co.za. One teacher later remarked how our educator, Thabo, “really made them laugh while still educating them”—a moment she called “really cool” aquarium.co.za. It was exactly that blend of joy and learning that fuels our mission.

Beyond this reach, the broader Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation—including the new Ocean Campus—has been scaling up. Thanks to generous grants like Suzuki Marine’s R36,000, they’ve made our outreach possible at just R48 per learner, empowering 750 youngsters with handson marine education aquarium.co.za+10blog.suzukimarine.co.za+10aquarium.co.za+10. On World Teachers' Day in October, over 400 educators were welcomed to the Ocean Campus, opening doors to expanded curriculum integration and a renewed sense of stewardship aquarium.co.za+1waterfront.co.za+1.

By the end of 2024, the Foundation’s outreach programs—including Oceans in Motion, early childhood puppet shows, and online modules—reached nearly 100,000 children across South Africa, including inland regions where the ocean may seem far off businesslive.co.za+4groundup.news+4allafrica.com+4. That growth reflects both urgent need and increasing demand.

So here’s where we stand:

  • Hundreds of learners have experienced the ocean up close—many for the first time.

  • Teachers are now ambassadors too, equipped to reinforce ocean awareness in their classrooms.

  • Our use of mobile aquariums, puppet shows, and digital tools ensures we reach diverse communities—from Cape Town’s coast to inland towns.

But the ocean’s challenges remain immense—and the need for funding is growing. Our van is overused, educators are stretched thin, and rural schools continue to slip beyond our reach. Every additional resource helps extend our program—more visits, more classrooms, more stories of wonder.

If you can support us—or share this project with friends—you’ll help keep the tide of ocean education moving outward. Each donation, no matter the size, ensures Thabo and his team can continue turning classrooms into miniature shorelines.

Thank you for helping us bring real marine experiences to real students. You’re fueling curiosity, care, and a future generation of ocean champions.
