Summary

Since April 15th, the war in Sudan has claimed thousands of lives and millions of women and girls are at immediate risk of sexual violence, as their bodies are being used as a war tactic. Millions have been displaced from their homes and many struggle to meet basic needs. Running water, electricity, and medical services/products are often unavailable. Sudan is not receiving sufficient resources to confront this crisis.

Challenge

Sudan's Darfur region has faced nearly two years of brutal conflict, siege, and famine, leaving hundreds of thousands at risk of starvation and over 48% of children malnourished. In this context of extreme scarcity and collapsed services, women and girls not only face hunger but heightened risks-including life-threatening infections due to lack of menstrual products, clean water, and medical care. Access to basic hygiene and hot meals is not only a necessity but a matter of dignity and safety.

Solution

Amidst the ongoing war and humanitarian crisis in Darfur, women are leading the response-keeping community kitchens running and preparing meals for thousands, often with almost nothing. These kitchens are lifelines for children, elders, women, and people with disabilities. At the same time, access to menstrual hygiene remains critical. Our community kitchen initiative, led by women and for women, provides not only meals but a safe space rooted in dignity, care, and collective resilience.

Long-Term Impact

Providing women and girls with the means to address their menstrual health with dignity during the war will increase positive impact on long-term reproductive health. Providing women with the means to keep community kitchens going will ensure displaced women and children receive the nourishment they desperately need. Together, access to both menstrual hygiene and regular hot meals will strengthen the resilience, health, and agency of women and girls- for recovery and long term well-being.
