Calm and quiet has become the norm today in the hallways and in the procedure room.
A month ago this was not the case as children in tears, some screaming, and their parents, filled with fear and apprehension, waited for biopsies or bone marrow aspirations – procedures that are painful and nerve-wracking.
Today, the children receive procedural pain medication and parents feel supported and empowered to address their child's emotional and physical pain. These care improvements are thanks to locally-led initiatives by palliative care doctors and nursing teams, communicating and working closely with their oncology and pathology colleagues.
The improved communications, support for families and pain relief for the children grew from Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration's education, leadership and advocacy programs. We see the power of these locally-led initiatives building healthcare capacity. It's where we provide our support.
At times it will not always be quiet in the hallways and procedure rooms, but thanks to donors like you it can be a safer and calmer experience for these children and their families.
