Food and Shelter for Philippine Typhoon Survivors

Dear Friends,

In the Philippines, heavy rains did not stop during the "Dry" Season but instead have persisted throughout the year. Asia America Initiative and our local and global partners have worked together as a well-experienced team to provide much-needed comfort and relief to hundreds of families.  From the central Mindanao region all the way to the northern Cagayan Valley, we have especially focused on the needs of the isolated mountain tribal peoples who are usually forgotten by the general society. Our partnerships have made it possible to get food, clothing, and hygiene supplies into areas where few relief supplies are available.

The Philippines leads the world in natural disasters. Asia America Initiative and local partners are conducting emergency and long-term relief including food and water to thousands of affected families. We apply lessons learned from two decades of relief programs. We provide shelter materials, hygiene supplies, medicines, and ongoing post-trauma services. Asia America Initiative provides medical and food support to disaster survivors, especially in remote villages that are difficult to reach. Since the pandemic began in 2019-2020, we have assisted thousands of families, especially children and the elderly, who are in desperate need. We extend our lifeline through partnerships with courageous volunteers and professionals. The immediate impact is to keep people alive, healthy, and in a positive frame of mind, enthusiastic about building a better future. The long-term effect is to have a role in addressing the medical and social systems of impacted communities.

Our long-time partner Dr. Yolanda and One World Institute is organizing an energetic network of close to 200,000 organic farmers in areas continuously hit by natural disasters.  This effort encourages self-sufficiency and makes use of the bountiful natural resources in community-based program areas.  Dr.Yoly says, " There are now busloads of gardeners trying to get together at many places that have been hit by floods and heavy rains. For example, in Davao, we are training farmers on how to plant organic. We now have 200,000 gardeners in live training and planting exercises. We also have 50,000 gardeners who have joined in Zoom training sessions to learn the re-cycling of unused boxes and water-proof containers.  Their spirit for survival is undefeatable."

Dear Friends of AAI,

Typhoon Agaton crossed the central islands of the Philippines on April 10-11th causing massive flooding in areas already struggling after December's Super Typhoon Odette. Asia America Initiative immediately took action through our school partners in Cuartero, Capiz, and Duenas, Iloilo. Fortunately, 18 large crates of AAI food and school supplies had just arrived.  Through our coordinator, Nurse Faith, we immediately began to reach out to schools devastated by the floodwaters and to provide relief to families affected. 

Rice, clean water, and hygiene supplies are now arriving in areas around Cebu and Visayas. Relief Centers are set up to contact families and to give them the supplies they need.

We have learned the skills of rapid response to natural disasters because the Philippines leads the world in natural calamities. Annual typhoons deliver destruction, displacing thousands of families across the island nation. Asia America Initiative and local partners conduct emergency and long-term relief including food and water to thousands of families. We apply lessons learned from two decades of relief programs. Our long-term goal is the self-sufficiency of storm survivors across the region. Our immediate goal is to keep people alive, healthy, and in a positive frame of mind enthusiastic about building a better future.
