Relief Workers Risk Their Lives in Remote Areas

By Albert Santoli | Program Director

Feeding at schools After floods in Sulu

The rainy season of 2025-2026 in Southeast Asia, especially the Philippines, has been a nightmares of natural dangers. In remote mountainous and island areas.  Relief workers who are primarily unpaid volunteers, risk their lives to assist suffering neighbors.

The humanitarian consortium of Asia America Initiative, One World Institute and IPI Foundation has worked tirelessly to provide live saving aid that has saved hundeds of families who have lost everything.  Thousands of these climate refugees now live in temporary tents, shacks or sleep out in open flooded ground.  Diseases such as leptospirosis which is a rat-borne plague, reqiring specialized anti-biotics are now major a concern.  It is especially dangerous for our volunteer relief workers who lack proper protective gear.

It is not only typhoons with blinding rain and howling wind of more than 100 miles per hour that threaten entire communities.  Live volcanoes in Luzon and eathquakes rampant off the coast of Mindanao and Visayas, are among multiple natural disasters posing a constant threat of structural damage.  Tsunami waves can reach up to 20 feet high and destroy entire cities.  In early 2026, in the Capitol area and the Visayas and Mindanao Regions we join local residents to rebuild schools and classrooms and to conduct medical missions.  We also are providing organic seeds for health outreach to people impacted by the storms.  "We can never give up our efforts," says Dr. Yolanda of OWI.  "But we must also put the safety of our volunteers first.  We are so inspired by their courage and dedication."  They need our support.
