By DR JOHN PHILIP | PROJECT LEADER
Most of us remember our school days, often with fondness - the teachers, classes, friends, and playfields.
What if we had a long walk to the school without food or water to drink? What if the school had damaged walls, broken doors and windows and no play fields? What would be our memories if our classrooms had no desks, and we had to sit on the floor to gaze up to the teacher – alongside over 100 puils.
This is not fake news; this is the reality we found on the island of Ukerewe in Tanzania.
With your help we have helped twelve schools to develop mini farms to grow maize and sorghum for porridge and have so far supplied over 700 desks to the neediest schools.
There are over 120 primary schools on the island each with over 1000 pupils, most are short of classroom furniture.
This is an ongoing project, currently a team of Vocational Trainees is making a batch of school desks. We’ll be handing over them to the authorities in November when 12 of us will go to the island to show our solidarity with the children and encourage them.
Thank you for your support so far; I know there are many conflicting demands on your generosity. But investing in the future of the children in Ukerewe is well worthwhile.
We’ve no overheads Every penny you do donate goes to the people of Ukerewe.
