Dear friends and supporters
Over the past few months, our K9-Unit has continued to prove just how vital these incredible dogs are in protecting wildlife across KwaZulu-Natal. Working side by side with rangers, our canine heroes have tracked poachers, removed snares, safeguarded rhinos, and patrolled thousands of kilometres on foot and by vehicle.
In just over four months, our teams patrolled more than 11,000km, removed over 90 snares, and intervened in several human–wildlife incidents – including responding to reports of a rhino being shot and assisting in the recovery of injured animals. The dogs’ exceptional tracking skills not only saved wildlife such as impala caught in snares but also helped locate poachers, with arrests made and illegal weapons seized in June.
Training and collaboration remain a cornerstone of the unit’s work. K9s like Dan, Kal, Zigge, Hans, and Akela underwent extensive tracking, detection, and bite-work training, often in coordination with Anti-Poaching Units (APUs), including our ZAP-Wing aerial patrol, and community members.
Our K9s are thriving thanks to the ongoing support of sponsors who provide them with high-quality nutrition, parasite protection, and veterinary care. Trusty Dog Food continues to fuel their demanding work, while Bravecto and deworming treatments keep them in peak condition. The unit was even featured alongside Trusty Dog Food in Pet Prints magazine – a testament to their hard work and dedication.
While challenges remain – such as the need for thermal drones, GPS collars, and additional K9s to expand our reach – the dedication of our dogs, handlers, and rangers ensures that reserves across KwaZulu-Natal remain better protected. None of this would be possible without your support.
Your generosity ensures that our dogs are healthy, well-trained, and ready for the frontline of conservation every day. Every kilometre patrolled, every snare removed, and every life saved is a direct result of your commitment to protecting South Africa’s wildlife. Thank You. Together, we are making a real and lasting difference.
