Justice and Human Rights Access in South Kivu

1. Background and Rationale

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in the rural areas of South Kivu, access to justice remains a privilege enjoyed by only a few. Rural populations face extreme poverty, limited knowledge of the law, lack of proximity to judicial institutions, and frequent human rights abuses—leaving them defenseless against injustice.

This project, titled "Promote Access to Justice and Human Rights in DRC", is an urgent response to these realities. It aims to strengthen the rule of law, improve legal services for vulnerable communities, and build a society where every citizen—regardless of their background—can claim their rights and seek justice.

2. Project Objectives

• Provide access to legal services for indigent populations in rural South Kivu.
• Strengthen the institutional and legal framework through advocacy for inclusive public policies.
• Train key justice sector stakeholders (paralegals, police officers, magistrates, etc.) on fundamental human rights.
• Raise awareness among local communities so they can become agents of their own rights.

3. Expected Results

• Increased access to justice for rural communities through decentralized legal services.
• Improved legislative and institutional environment for justice and governance.
• Development of a network of community paralegals, able to offer primary legal assistance in villages, police stations, prisons, and courts.
• A critical mass of informed and empowered citizens, capable of demanding their rights and holding duty bearers accountable.

4. Project Progress So Far

• Thanks to our partnership with GlobalGiving, we have already raised $63, an encouraging first step toward our goal of $30,000.
• We are currently in the preparatory phase, focusing on identifying trainers and learners.
• The official launch of the project is scheduled for November 2025.
