As detailed in our previous reports, Baboon Matters no longer manages the CT2 troop, however we continue to work round the clock for baboons over South Africa. We thank you so much for your support for this specific project and urge you to keep supporting the important work of Baboon Matters as we strive to provide advocacy and protection for these persecuted primates. Please consider making your donations to our project:
Help Baboon Matters help baboons! (Project 51322 on GlobalGiving)
To give you an idea of the work we have covered in the past 2 months, I include a breakdown showing the kilometers driven and areas visited to help baboons in need, it has been exceptionally busy!.
We have also made progress on our upcoming project to undertake a Baboon Population Estimation over South Africa, as we are concerned that there are not nearly as many baboons as conservation authorities predict; accurate data will help determine better management strategies and provider better protection for these charismatic primates.
Baboon Matters recently created two podcasts in which we hold conversations with our colleagues to discuss the future of our baboons; the podcasts are extremely interesting and informative and I urge you to take time and watch them via You tube:.
Baboons Matter: Conversations for the Future of our baboons.
The Cape Peninsula’s baboons are at a turning point. Decisions made today will shape not only their future, but the way South Africa manages human–wildlife coexistence.
That’s why we’re launching a brand-new podcast series: frank, robust, and insightful conversations with leading voices in conservation, ethics, and management.
No sugar-coating. No easy answers. Just the real discussions we must have.
Episode 1 – The Ethics of Killing Baboons
Should baboons be killed as a management tool? Assoc. Prof. Elisa Galgut, Ryno Engelbrecht (Baboon Management WC), and Jenni Trethowan (Baboon Matters) unpack the ethics and implications of proposals to cull or remove entire troops.

Episode 2 – Do the Guidelines Really Protect Baboons?
How effective are current management guidelines? Lorraine Holloway (Baboons of the South) and Ryno Engelbrecht and Jenni Trethowan examine the real impacts of removals on baboons, questioning whether the guidelines are applied judiciously.

After an extremely busy year, we are planning ahead and hope you will continue to support our innovative efforts through our Project Help Baboon Matters help baboons (Project 51322) – we are reliant on your help to ensure protection for baboons everywhere! Thank you for your ongoing help and contributions!
