Protect women from sex trafficking in Mumbai

Protecting women from sex trafficking requires a multifaceted approach that includes education, community support, advocacy, and victim assistance. By working together, individuals and communities can create a safer environment and significantly reduce the risk of trafficking.

El Shaddai provides comprehensive support services for the women of the red light areas including Education, counseling, medical help, legal assistance, and job training, as it is vital for their recovery and reintegration into society.

El Shaddai focuses on helping women gain vocational skills. We assist women in enrolling in tailoring and other courses, aiming to make them self-sustainable within a year. This approach not only provides women with skills but also helps them reintegrate into society by offering alternative livelihoods.

With health initiatives, skill development, and with the continuous support of generous sponsors like you, we were able to make significant strides in empowering women from red light areas. With your love and support, we could not only address immediate needs but also contribute to long-term change, helping women reclaim their lives and build a brighter future.

We have a challenging story of survival of a woman named Amrita (name changed). She lived in the slums of Karnataka and one day at the age of 15, she was lured into the world of sex work under the false promise of a well-paying job. She found herself in a red light area, where she encountered a harsh reality. Despite the challenges, she remained resilient, holding onto the hope of one day escaping this life. One day, while walking through the area, she met our outreach worker from the El Shaddai Rena Project who offered her information about a program aimed at helping women transition out of sex work. Intrigued and hopeful, she decided to attend the outreach program. The program provided comprehensive support, including Health Education and Skill Development. With the help of the Rena Project she managed to get away from the horrors of the red light areas. She found solace in a community of women who shared similar experiences. She learnt many vocational skills like embroidery and sewing. Her journey from despair to empowerment demonstrated that with support and determination, change is possible.

Joining Hands: Restoring Hope

Dear friend,

Women are one of the major groups considered most vulnerable to human trafficking. For purposes of sexual or commercial exploitation, women and girls are kidnapped, sold, and coerced by slavers in nearly every country in the world. Trafficking in women is a serious violation of human rights that needs to be fought.

The trafficking of women and children causes untold misery as it violates the rights and dignity of the individual in several ways. It violates the individual's rights to life, dignity, security, privacy, health, education and redressal of grievances. El Shaddai provides critical services for women from red-light areas, such as medical Care and Counseling, Legal Assistance, Skill-building, and Education. These services can help these women rebuild their lives by offering vocational training and educational programs.

El Shaddai also has a Home called Rena Home in Mumbai for the children from the red light areas. Presently we have 20 children residing with us. El Shaddai plays an essential part in the global fight against women trafficking, focusing not only on the immediate needs of survivors but also on long-term prevention and systemic change.

We have a heartfelt story of a girl named Rajini (name changed). She came from a poor village in Chhattisgarh. She left her studies in the hope of getting a good job and earning for her family. But her hopes were shattered as the job was just a pretext to lure her into trafficking. For 5 years she endured the torture and torment until one day one of our outreach workers met her and rescued her from her misery. She cannot forget her past she says but looks forward to a better future. Some many girls and women just need a ray of hope to change their lives for the better.

All the work we do for the service of these women and girls is only with the support and generosity of people like you and we extend our heartfelt gratitude for helping us in this cause of changing women’s lives.

Protecting women, renewing lives.

Dear Friend,

Human trafficking is a violation of human rights that has a lasting and serious effect on those who are abused. To defeat it, the government, and various communities work together in a coordinated manner, focusing on collaboration, security, law enforcement and safeguarding. As an organization that strives to support victims of flesh trade, we come across a number of heart wrenching stories.

This is the story of Sudha (name changed) who hails from the state of Maharashtra. She was a young girl, full of dreams, enthusiasm and hope for living a normal and happy life. Little did she know that her life would take a treacherous turn. She got married at a very young age and lived happily with her husband, who was a daily-wage laborer. They also had a boy child. Over time, her husband got addicted to alcohol and, under the influence of the same, would harass her. She decided to have a fresh start when her son was 5 years old and moved to Mumbai with a few other women from her village, hoping to find a good job and live a peaceful life. But, those women forced her into prostitution at one of the red light districts in Mumbai. Since there was no other way out, she had to forcefully continue living at the brothel. To ensure better care for her son, she enrolled him in a children’s home and continued working at the brothel for almost 7 years. Our team reached out to her, understood her story, counselled her, and now she has safely relocated into our care at Rena Shelter for Women.

The mindset of a person who has undergone such a tough phase, can be very complex and deeply impacted by their experiences. The goal of our organization is to reach out to those people who have been forced into such adversities that eventually harm them mentally, physically, and socially. People who work at the brothels do not receive the same respect and dignity as the rest of us. We aim to reset the lives of these women and provide them with a chance to live. If only we can unite to help them and end human trafficking or abuse, we will be able to give them a better view of the world – one that is safe and supportive.
