Dear Friend,
Thank you for helping in rescuing women and children from Mumbai’s red-light districts. Your gift is transforming the lives of women and children that were trapped in a life of abuse. Project Rene is doing tremendous work in Turbhe Navi Mumbai to fight against prostitution in the red light district for the development of women and children who are living in captivity.
Project Rene wants to give meaning to their life and make them feel that they exist in the house, a house that never stops giving children a new home and a chance to live. The project is helping them to voice out and address their needs. There are many young girls living in the red-light districts because their mothers are a part of the sex trade. As young girls get older, it is extremely dangerous for them to be in this environment, and they often end up in the sex trade by themselves. Rabiya is a young girl whom we were able to rescue from the red-light district before she was a part of the sex trade.
Rabiya used to live in Turbhe in the lane area. Rabiya’s mother Rakhi is still in prostitution and her stepfather is most of the time alone with the girl at home which makes her feel that her daughter is unsafe. The mother always doubts her husband about his bad intentions towards her daughter and always thinks that he might do something inappropriate with her own daughter and once the same thing was conveyed by her daughter to her mother. Since Rakhi lives in poverty and their only source of income is prostitution.
One day our social worker approached Rakhi and her daughter. The mother narrated the incident and what her daughter is going through. Rakhi wanted some help in order to send her daughter to stay with her grandmother in Guwahati. When Rabiya was rescued, she was a quiet, shy girl who had lived in an unsafe environment her whole life. With the permission of her mother, Rabiya was rescued from the red-light district and was sent to stay with her grandmother. Rabiya displays an extremely shy and fearful approach because of her past trauma. Rabiya also did not know how to write and had no educational foundation. Through counselling, love, and care, Rabiya is feeling safe and has come out of her shell. She now studies in school and has been showing continuous progress in her studies. Our team is in constant touch with her and has been providing all the necessary help and support needed. Rabiya is flourishing now because of the counselling, education, and safety that she has received. Rabiya would still be living in the red-light district, uneducated and hopeless, if it was not you who lent a helping hand. When we work together, we can change lives!
