Dear Patron,
We bring to you our latest report on “Protecting women from sex trafficking in Mumbai”
In a recent research report, it was stated that approximately 16 million women are victims of sex trafficking in India a year. Almost 40% of them are adolescents and children. That means one woman or child is trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation every 60 seconds. This is alarming!
We at El Shaddai strive for a world in which no human being is bought or sold but to see every girl in the school and set every woman free. With this goal El Shaddai has started the Rena Project in Mumbai. This Project actively works in prevention, rescue, rehabilitation, reintegration and advocacy to combat trafficking and restore dignity to victims of commercial sexual exploitation.
Under the Rena Project, we have recently started a new Home called the “Rena Home”. Through this Project girls, boys and women receive education, healthcare, counselling, various forms of vocational and skills training, and legal aid. At the Rena Project thirty children are attending the Tuition programme and twenty women are attending the literacy programme and the vocational programme. They are learning the English alphabet, and numbers and are making beautiful embroidered bags.
We like to share the story of a woman who was rescued from the horrors of sex trafficking. Radha (name changed) hails from a place in West Bengal, which is vulnerable to human trafficking. She met a man and was head over heels in love with him. Little did she know that he was operating a sex racket in that area. On the pretext of marriage, he took her to Mumbai and straight to a brothel. Although she was rescued, she had no hope left and accepted her fate. But her fate took a different turn and that was towards the “Rena Project”. Here she felt accepted, loved and cared for. With a lot of hard work and dedication, she learnt sewing from our vocational courses and now she is a confident woman who takes stitching and embroidery orders and has survived all odds.
El Shaddai is involved in the campaign, advocacy and socio-economic re-integration of the trafficked victims. Through this project, we address the root causes of poverty leading to the trafficking of girls for sex and labour by providing care and support from a holistic perspective to bring them out of poverty and misery and transform their lives.
With your help and continued support, we have been able to give these women hope for a better tomorrow. We aim to rescue more women and children and provide them with the necessary education, training and skills so that they can have a sustainable livelihood”.
We the El Shaddai family are so grateful and thankful that you chose to donate to this cause for protecting women from sex trafficking in Mumbai and helping women to lead a life of dignity.
