Breaking free: Saving lives

By Julia Matthew | Managing Director

Dear Patron,

Greetings from El Shaddai Charitable Trust! We bring to you our latest report on “Protecting women from sex trafficking in Mumbai.”

Sex trafficking is a significant issue in India, with millions of people being exploited in commercial sex within the country. It is reported that India is the main recipient of an estimated 150,000 women and girls trafficked into India from other countries

The majority of victims of sex trafficking in India are women and girls. Traffickers employ various methods to deceive or coerce them, such as promising good jobs, luring them with false romantic relationships, buying them from poor families, or even kidnapping them. Shockingly, girls as young as 12 years old are sold to sex traffickers in rural communities, the world these women live in is a very horrific one and to help all such women we have started the Rena Project and the Rena Home. We have 30 women and 20 children enrolled for tuition and vocational training. There are 15 children of sex workers residing in our homes. Many of these women have been able to use their vocational skills to start their small businesses like tailoring and sewing.

We have a heartwarming story of a girl named Neha (name changed). She was promised by a very close friend a job at the call centre in Mumbai. But the friend had other evil designs and that was to sell her to a brothel. She was trapped in a world filled with darkness and despair. Stripped of her freedom and dignity, she became a victim of the cruel realities of human trafficking.

Forced into a life of sexual exploitation, she endured unimaginable pain and suffering. Each day was a battle to survive, as she was subjected to abuse and degradation. But one day all this would change as a Rena Project staff met this lady at an outreach programme. At that moment she found a glimmer of hope. She received counselling, education, and vocational training, enabling her to rebuild her life. Slowly, she regained her confidence and discovered her talent for sewing and designing bags, using it as a form of self-expression and healing.

She shared her story, raising awareness about the horrors faced by countless individuals worldwide. Her story served as a reminder that even in the face of unimaginable adversity, one can find the strength to rise above and create a better tomorrow.

And this hope of a better tomorrow could only be possible with your generous help and support towards our cause.

We thank you for your incredible support and together, we can make a lasting impact and create a better world for all. Without your unwavering support, none of this would have been possible.

Thanking you,

Sincerely with gratitude

El Shaddai Family
