Progress report, September 2023

Inspecting a nest in the IRTRA. It was successful

This report documents the work of the COLORES consortium during the year 2023, sharing the data collected, the achievements made and the challenges that still face us within our financial and personal constraints.  A full report is attached.

As in years past, Manuel Galindo served as project coordinator and field technician, continuing with the research and coordination at the ten hotspots. During the December – May breeding season he worked with local volunteer data collectors to identify and monitor nests and detect and control threats faced by the yellow-naped parrot in the field. Likewise, he maintained the personal friendships with farm employees and owners needed to effectively share information and findings. This is a day-to-day task that involves a lot of work and a certain amount of risk, being exposed to poachers and traffickers.

In this 2023 breeding season, it was possible to integrate new work sites such as Finca El Manantial in Taxisco, Santa Rosa and the IRTRA theme parks (where we had a successful nest), as well as continue with a proposal with the Rainforest Alliance, with whom we will be working in biodiversity monitoring and community organization in the area of Manchon Guamuchal.

In 2023, we were also able to put together a tree climbing team, and for the first time documented a successful nest in the IRTRA.  Of all nest that we monitored, one was documented to be successful, 3 were probably successful and 2 failed.

We continue our efforts to save the yellow-naped amazon on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, as well as save other endangered birds such as the scarlet macaw and the mealy parrot.

Our many thanks to everyone who has been supporting this important work.
