Our Partners, Shark Guardian

By Kate Robey | Charitable Trust Operations Manager

Getting into the spirit of the sharks!
Getting into the spirit of the sharks!

Dear Supporter,

Today we want to tell you about the amazing partner that we support, Shark Guardian.  Shark Guardian is a UK registered charity that works to promote shark and marine conservation all around the world. Lucky for us, they have an office right here in Thailand! In order to promote shark awareness here at GVI, Brendon from Shark Guardian came to our base to give our staff and volunteers a chat about why sharks are so important in marine ecosystems.

We were keen to help them create more awareness about the amazing sharks that we are so lucky to have here where we live, so we partnered with them back in 2014. We got, Brendon, the founder of Shark Guardian, to come out to our base and chat to all of the staff and volunteers about sharks and why they are so important in our marine ecosystems. We all learnt so much and were keen to help these majestic and misunderstood animals.

Our role is to help Shark Guardian by promoting ethical shark diving around dive shops in the Khao Lak area.  You might remember that last year we hosted a fundraiser for this? We have distributed posters that outline a whale shark code-of-conduct. It lets people know how to approach the animals, how to interact with them and how to be respectful of them.

We also distributed posters advertising E-Shark, an online database of presence/absence data for sharks, turtles and rays. Our volunteers visit dive shops in the Khao Lak area to collect E-shark data and input it onto the online database.  This data has been used in several publications to assist with shark conservation and results have been used to assist the IUCN data of sharks for the Convention of International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES).

We love doing our part to help keep the sharks safe and better understood! Thank you for supporting us in our mission!

With Gratitude,

GVI Thailand
