Sharks of the Sand!

By Katie Woodroffe | GVI Phang Nga Project Coordinator

Our Sand Shark!
Our Sand Shark!

Dear Supporters,

Today we would like to tell you about the amazing fundraising event we held for one of our great partners, Shark Guardian!  Two of our Conservation Interns, Victoria and Tom, had the brilliant idea of organising a Sand Shark Sculpture event on one of our local beaches to raise money for Shark Guardian.  Using creativity and art is a perfect way to raise awareness of sharks and the important need for their conservation.

Everyone who attended the event had so much fun and put a lot of effort into their top quality sculptures, raising over a massive 10,000 baht - that's over £200 or $280!

Our role here in Phang Nga, Thailand is to help Shark Guardian raise awareness of the importance of sharks within these beautiful marine ecosystems that surround us, as well as promoting ethical shark diving around dive shops in the area of Khao Lak.  We also assist them with the input of data to their E-Shark project - the largest citizen science shark monitoring project in Thailand!

We are also about to launch the "Off The Hook" campaign which is an anti-shark-finning campaign across the Bang Niang and Khao Lak area of Phang Nga.  Unfortunately, shark fin soup is still eaten in some restaurants across Thailand.  Many people are unaware of the detrimental effects the loss of sharks can have on our oceans, as well as the dangerous effects it can have if humans consume it. However, it only takes a few minutes for people to learn the facts and hopefully pass on this information to friends and family.  We have designed, and will soon be printing and distributing anti-shark fin posters in the area, specifically targeting restaurants and markets that sell shark fin and other shark products. Our volunteers have already begun checking menus in the area to scope out restaurants that sell shark ready for us to begin the campaign!

Sharks are apex predators and play an extremely important role in maintaining the balance of healthy marine ecosystems that billions of people depend on, so we need to protect them!

Thank you for your support - we will continue to speak up for the sharks!

With Gratitude,

GVI Thailand
