A Story About a Shark

Setting up the camera traps on the islands

Dear Supporters,

Thanks to your donations, we have managed to fund the translation and printing of 1,000 story books about sharks.  Our partners, Shark Guardian, have just received the first copy of their book “Sharks – Our Ocean Guardians” in Thai, with the rest printing as I type!

We will use this book to introduce children to the dangers that sharks face and how important they are to our ecosystem. The book is written in a way that is enjoyable for small children all the way to high school students.

Sharks – Our Ocean Guardians will soon be launched through collaboration with several schools around Southern Thailand. We will be involved in organising and taking part in these events so stay tuned to see the exciting book launch later in the year!!

We will continue to fundraise to support Shark Guardian. In our pipeline, we hope to support them with printing high-quality posters on Leopard Sharks. These posters would be distributed at dive centres and shops so people can identify them during their dives.

We would also like to help them to develop a Shark Guardian App, where people can share their sightings after dives, and follow the great work Shark Guardian is doing all over Thailand.

New Research Project

GVI staff, volunteers and members of the local communities on Koh Prathong and Koh Ra, have been excited to see the early stages of our large research project take shape with monthly visits to the islands.  We have already had exciting footage of Sambar Deer and Wild Boar!  With your help, we aim to increase the collection of camera traps, placing them across the two beautiful and undeveloped islands, to gain an idea of the wildlife that is inhabiting the different habitats including mangroves, beach swamps, rainforest and grasslands.  Further documentation of the biodiversity of the island will result in an increased interest from wildlife enthusiasts, thus bringing more income to the homestays and community.

We look forward to bringing you more exciting news on our progress in the next 3 months!

With Gratitide,
GVI Thailand
