Dear Supporters,

Island Conservation

Here at GVI Phang Nga, we are planning to purchase a new laptop to help us upload our data from several of our projects onto E-Bird, as well as our own GVI databases.  The amount of data we are sorting and uploading is increasing; not only are we spending more time out collecting data on the birds we are seeing in the area, we now have a total of 6 camera traps set up across both Koh Prathong and Koh Ra.  Some of these cameras are giving us hundreds of photos upon each retrieval hike we do!

Our visits to the islands are still progressing extremely well.  We have successfully placed out cameras at two new locations on our past two visits, and are due to place another two at two further locations on our next visit.  We have begun focusing our attention and camera trapping efforts towards the North and the Southern part of Koh Ra, based on recommendations from our brilliant local guide, Khun Et.  On several occasions, we have observed deer tracks, wild boar tracks and leaf beds and, most importantly, Pangolin scratch marks on trees and termite mounds.  We are quite certain that it is only a matter of time before we catch a glimpse of the illusive scaly anteater on one of our camera traps and we will continue to increase our collection so that we can work to protect this amazing species and the very special island it lives on.

Shark Conservation

Last but not least, we are still busy working with Shark Guardian and making plans for the big book release!  We have also decided to have more educational materials on shark species designed for distribution, including posters which will also help highlight the Spot the Leopard Shark. This is a community-based project which is a joint venture that Shark Guardian promote between Thai researchers at Phuket Marine Biology Centre, Australian researchers from the University of Queensland and the diving community of Thailand.

We will keep you updated and share some of these great posters with you soon!

Thank you for your continued support!

With Gratitude,
GVI Thailand
