A Girl's Resilience in the Face of Hardship

By Chanika Yat | Communication Facilitator

Growing up in Phnom Penh, Maliza faced many hardships early in life—losing her father and battling family financial struggles. Her mother’s health limits her ability to work, and her family survives on the modest allowance of her sister, making education a challenge.

“I feel unhappy when I see my mom and family facing difficulties,” she added. Maliza always takes care of herself; she pays for her studies and materials.

Despite these obstacles, a spark of hope ignited when Maliza enrolled in AusCam’s scholarship program. With access to life skills training, emotional support, school fee support, and rice support, Mariza’s outlook changed. Through AusCam, she received not just resources, but confidence and inspiration.

Today, she is a first-year Psychology student at Royal University of Phnom Penh, also serving as a Peer Mentor and leader in campaigns like “Girls for Safety Online.” and Girls’ Leadership Council. Her active participation in Glow Club and Healthy Glow transformed her from a shy girl into a confident advocate.

“This was the first time I stood and spoke in front of 100 students about online child sexual exploitation, which is a sensitive topic. I am so proud of myself,” she said.

“It’s more valuable than money; it aligns with my passion. I am very happy that I can contribute to preventing girls and young women from being at high risk,” she said.

Mariza now dreams of becoming a psychologist to support others facing emotional challenges. Her journey exemplifies resilience—turning adversity into opportunity—propelled by support, determination, and hope.
