Project Report | Jun 12, 2025
seeking additional funding and support

By Donatien Ndizeye | M&E Leader

Introduction

The "Provide 66 Adolescent Mothers with Milking Cows" project was initiated with the primary goal of empowering adolescent mothers by equipping them with a sustainable source of income and nutrition.

Through this initiative, we aimed to address some of the pressing challenges faced by young mothers, including poverty, food insecurity, and lack of economic opportunities. By providing milking cows, the project seeks to create lasting change, improving both the livelihoods of these young women and the well-being of their children.

Project Objectives

  • Empower 66 adolescent mothers through livestock ownership.
  • Provide a sustainable and reliable source of income for the beneficiaries.
  • Improve family nutrition through access to fresh milk.
  • Reduce poverty among adolescent mothers and their children.
  • Promote long-term economic self-sufficiency and confidence.

Achievements to Date

Since the inception of the project, we have successfully:

  • Identified and registered 66 adolescent mothers who are in critical need of support.
  • Provided initial training sessions on cow management, basic veterinary care, and financial literacy to prepare beneficiaries for livestock ownership.
  • Established partnerships with local veterinarians and agricultural extension officers to support the ongoing health and productivity of the cows.
  • Delivered the first batch of milking cows to a portion of the beneficiaries, who have already begun to experience the benefits of dairy farming, including improved household nutrition and initial income from the sale of milk.

Impact

The early outcomes have been promising.

Beneficiaries have reported:

  • Increased household food security due to access to milk.
  • A boost in self-esteem and hope for the future, knowing they can contribute to their family's welfare.
  • The ability to save and invest some income from milk sales into their children's education and household needs.

Challenges

Despite the initial success, the project has faced significant challenges that have slowed its full implementation:

  • Limited Funding: While we are deeply grateful to all who have donated, current financial resources are insufficient to provide cows to all 66 adolescent mothers. Several participants are still waiting to receive their livestock.
  • Rising Costs: Inflation and increased transportation and veterinary costs have also strained the project budget.
  • Ongoing Support Needs:  Continued training, veterinary care, and technical support are essential to ensure the long-term success of the beneficiaries, requiring additional resources.

Next Steps

To fully realize the potential of this project, we are actively seeking additional funding and support. The next steps include:

  • Securing further donations to complete the distribution of cows to all 66 beneficiaries.
  • Expanding training programs to include advanced dairy farming skills, marketing, and small business management.
  • Strengthening partnerships with local stakeholders to provide ongoing support and monitoring.

Conclusion

The "Provide 66 Adolescent Mothers with Milking Cows" project has already begun to transform lives, offering adolescent mothers a path out of poverty and towards sustainable livelihoods. However, the full vision can only be realized with continued financial support and commitment from donors and partners. We remain hopeful and dedicated to completing this mission, ensuring that all 66 adolescent mothers can benefit from the opportunities that livestock ownership brings.

We sincerely thank all donors and supporters who have made this journey possible so far. Your generosity has planted the seeds of change; with your continued support, we can help these young women harvest the full fruits of empowerment and economic independence.
