Clean Water Brings New Hope for Lea

By Mel | Individual Giving Coordinator

Meet Lea, One of the Students You've Helped.

In our last update, we shared how your support helped bring clean water to SMP Wee Wella in Southwest Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, a school that used to struggle every day to meet its most basic needs.

Today, we'd love for you to meet Lea, one of the students whose life has been changed by your generosity.

For years, Lea and her classmates studied in a school where clean water was scarce. Almost every morning, they walked long distances from home, carrying jerry cans to fill the school's water tank. Often, there wasn't enough water even for the toilets.

"My school's toilets often had limited water, and sometimes there was no water at all. This made my friends and me feel uncomfortable using them, and it forced me to hold back when I needed to go to the toilet."Lea, Student of SMP Wee Wella.

It was especially difficult for girls during their periods, as they sometimes missed school due to a lack of water.

A Well of Hope

Thanks to kind people like you, SMP Wee Wella now has a borewell connected to the school's toilets and new sinks, ensuring reliable water every day.

"After the new well was installed, I feel thrilled because I no longer have to go to nearby homes when the school runs out of water. Sometimes, my friends and I even bathe in the school toilets when there's no water at home. I'm also glad that I can help my family by bringing water back to our home." — Lea.

Teachers and parents have noticed the difference, too: cleaner surroundings, healthier habits, and a greener schoolyard.

"Students now wash their hands immediately after using the toilets, and the school is greener with more plants. We're also saving money because we no longer buy water." — Anton Mete Raya, Teacher.

"I'm so happy there's water at the school. We can also access it for our needs, and now I can save money on buying water. It helps me grow my plants and care for my livestock." — Ani Kaka, Parent and Community Member.

Thanks to your kindness, Lea and her friends can now focus on learning, no longer burdened by the daily struggle for water. Your support continues to turn every drop into lasting change for children and families in Southwest Sumba.
