Summary

In Nepal medical care comes with a price tag many cannot afford. We partner with an organisation called Medical Rehabilitation Organisation (MeRO) who operate a medical Shelter in Kathmandu. Between us we fund & facilitate medical & surgical intervention, nursing care, physiotherapy and rehabilitation services for people who have experienced life changing illness or injury and cannot access such services due to poverty. We change their lives and improve health outcomes on so many levels.

Challenge

Medical care is not free in Nepal. Most of MeRO's patients come from regional and remote parts of Nepal where timely access to services we take for granted is limited. Poverty is rife, medical facilities are under-staffed and under-resourced. Many patients experience extensive delays in receiving appropriate and timely medical care, sometimes with catastrophic consequences. They are also vulnerable to exploitation due to poor health literacy, poverty and are in desperate financial circumstances.

Solution

Our support enables our project partner organisation, MeRO, operate a 20 bed medical Shelter in Kathmandu. This provides a safe place for patients to stay whilst appropriate medical treatment is found. MeRO advocates for them and helps them navigate a complex, often corrupt, expensive medical system. Your support funds medical & surgical intervention, nursing care, physiotherapy and rehabilitation services, medication and medical equipment for each patient's often long road to rehabilitation.

Long-Term Impact

Almost 1000 patient lives have been changed so far because of what we and MeRO do. Multiply that by many times to incorporate the impact on the lives of significant family members. Patients are often critically injured or seriously unwell by the time they come to the Shelter. They are depressed, suicidal and would sink deeper into debt and poverty without our intervention. Together, we enable access to health care which improves health outcomes, maximizes independence and alleviates poverty.
