John’s early years were marked by hardship. He grew up in a chaotic home with a violent, alcoholic father, and when his parents separated, neither showed concern for his well-being. With no safe home and no school fees, John spent much of his childhood on the streets, denied the chance of an education.
His life took a dramatic turn after a grueling two-day journey on foot. Alongside five other children, John walked approximately 80 kilometers from Murang’a to Nairobi in search of something many of us take for granted, the opportunity to learn.
In Nairobi, the children were spotted by a compassionate well-wisher who returned them to Murang’a. From there, the local Children’s Department referred John to Roko 20 Academy a decision that would change his life forever.
At first, John struggled to adjust, finding it difficult to connect with both students and teachers. But we saw his potential. With patient support, we helped him build his confidence, self-esteem, and trust in others.
Today, John is a Grade 8 pupil and a full-time resident at Roko 20 Academy, even during the school holidays. His transformation is nothing short of remarkable. Academically, he is thriving. On the sports field, he has become a talented footballer and runner. As a leader, he now mentors younger students, coordinates academy projects such as rabbit and chicken rearing, and cares for our dogs. He even introduced a dedicated time for students to share their personal and academic challenges, making our guidance and counseling sessions far more effective.
John’s growth extends far beyond academics and athletics. He is an active, valued member of the Roko 20 community. He helps with trench digging, planting sweet potatoes, cowpeas, and bananas, and is now preparing land for pumpkins and coriander. His curiosity and love of debate make him a favorite among volunteers, with whom he shares lively conversations about cultures from around the world.
Your support made John’s story possible. Without your generosity, he might still be on the streets, searching for hope. Instead, he is now a confident, capable young man with dreams, skills, and a future, proof that your contributions are not just changing lives, but shaping leaders.
