Tallying Up Water Wells-Improving Quality of Life

By Rick Carlton | Founder and Managing Director

As mentioned in the past, the rural villagers who will benefit from the clean, safe water acquired from these deep well sources have been suffering under the dangerous and challenging burden of attempting to secure water from seriously-contaminated ponds shared with wild animals -- and many have paid with their very lives. A 2024 BBC report revealed that millions of women in India spend several hours daily in the quest for potable water; the NGO International Development Organization estimates that Indian women spend 150 million work days every year fetching water.1 Needless to say, the waste represented in that statistic is staggering.

SevaChild is intent on eradicating the hazards and obstacles faced by India's rural and tribal populations, and potable water is an excellent place to begin. Thus far, SevaChild has drilled and made operational 150 wells in some of the most at-risk communities in rural India! A well costs $1950 to construct; as completed, it features a pump, cement platform, and a floodlight to ward off uninvited nighttime predators.

Situated on the Bay of Bengal, India is uniquely positioned for vulnerability with respect to meteorological phenomena, prominent among which are monsoonal rains.  Nevertheless, SevaChild continues to work around such extreme weather events, plugging away until the goal has been achieved. We are intent on eradicating the hazards and obstacles faced by India's rural and tribal populations, and potable water is an excellent place to begin. As we are all well aware, water is life!
