Dear BEST Angels,
We’ve had a busy and exciting few months since the Spring tournaments in February! Here’s a quick look at what we’ve been up to — three more tournaments, a special training program for younger students, and lots of inspiring moments along the way.
Balkan Voices 2025
From March 14–16, we hosted the Balkan Voices International Oratory and Speech Competition at the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) in Blagoevgrad. A big thanks to AUBG for once again welcoming us and offering their beautiful campus for the event!
This year, we were thrilled to welcome 70 students from Bulgaria, Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. They competed in Original Oratory and Extemporaneous Speaking, and also took part in an amazing workshop — “Lost and Found in Translation” — led by Angela Rodel from the Fulbright Commission. We even hosted a fun Broadcasting Challenge to round out the experience!
The tournament wrapped up on a high note with special guest Ms. Margee Ensign, President of AUBG, joining us at the closing ceremony.
Debate Training for Middle Schoolers
We were excited to partner with teachers from Progressive School 2 in Varna, who asked for our help in introducing debate to their 5th, 6th, and 7th graders. Of course, we said yes!
We ran several workshops for both teachers and students, covering debate structure, rules, and best practices. The program wrapped up with a final debate on March 26th, hosted at the American Corner in Varna’s Pencho Slaveykov Library. We’re so proud of these young debaters and can’t wait to see how they grow — hopefully into future BESTies!
Totten Cup – Online Debate Tournament
On March 29th, we held our third online debate tournament of the school year: the Totten Cup. Eight teams and 26 incredible students participated in fast-paced, impromptu rounds with some truly thought-provoking motions.
Topics ranged from the impact of being optimistic about others, to the cultural influence of reality TV, to the effects of the rise of budget airlines. The competition was fierce, the discussions deep, and we even celebrated a few standout speakers with special awards!
National Tournament 2025
From April 11–13, we closed out the academic year in Sofia at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE). This tournament brought together the best teams from all our regional and online tournaments — and wow, what a crowd!
We had 350 participants from 37 schools, 90 volunteer judges, and a record-breaking 50 debate teams. The energy was electric, and our amazing guest speakers — including UNWE Rector Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov, Eric Brassil from the U.S. Embassy, Valya Nadova from the America for Bulgaria Foundation, Angela Rodel, and journalist Viktoria Boyadzhieva — helped kick things off with inspiring messages.
At the closing ceremony, we were honored to welcome Nikolay Angelov, President of the Debate Association Bulgaria and World Debate Vice-Champion. We’re proud to team up with the Debate Association Bulgaria to create a national debate team and support their journey to international tournaments!
Thank You, Angels!
None of this would be possible without you — our incredible BEST Angels. Your support (whether financial, moral, or logistical) makes everything we do possible. Your presence at our events means so much, and we’re always happy to see you experience the magic of BEST in person.
If you’d like to keep supporting us, it would mean the world if you could share our project with your friends, and consider setting up a monthly donation. BEST is growing fast — and we truly need you now more than ever.
Your support changes lives. Every student who joins our tournaments leaves with new skills, new confidence, and a community they can count on. Thank you for being part of that.
Wishing you a fantastic summer ahead!
