Rainforest Protectors Trust is working to safeguard the Sinharaja World Heritage Rainforest in Sri Lanka by creating a protected buffer zone. This is achieved through the purchase and permanent conservation of privately owned forest lands bordering the rainforest, ensuring long-term protection against encroachment and habitat loss. To strengthen this effort, the Trust is establishing a Rainforest Conservation and Education Center.
Privately owned forest lands bordering the Sinharaja World Heritage Rainforest are increasingly threatened by deforestation, primarily due to clear-cutting for expanding tea plantations. To safeguard this fragile ecosystem, there is a pressing need for facilities that support conservation efforts.
Accommodation for rangers and volunteers to enable continuous monitoring and protection of the rainforest. Endemic plant nursery to propagate native species, restore degraded areas, and strengthen biodiversity. Education and visitor center to engage local communities and international tourists. Community empowerment to help locals adopt sustainable livelihoods. By combining protection, restoration, and education, this initiative would serve as a community-based conservation hub.
The Rainforest Conservation and Education Center will not only strengthen protection of the buffer zone lands safeguarded by Rainforest Protectors Trust, but also serve as a strategic base for rangers and volunteers to monitor and defend the entire northern boundary of the Sinharaja World Heritage Rainforest. A partially built house has already been acquired for this purpose. Renovation and completion are now required to transform it into a fully functional conservation and education center.
