This summer with MBF’s support Alternare reforested 143.29 hectares with 50,936 trees around the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve (MBBR) with 750 people from seven indigenous communities and four ejidos (communal properties).
Additionally, throughout the year communities continued benefiting and learning sustainable skills from the 132 workshops given by Alternare to 1,105 participants. Workshops included sustainable farming, agroecological techniques, construction of fuel-efficient stove and cisterns among many other topics.
María de la Luz Olmos Domínguez, 60 years old from ejido Asoleadearo participated in an agrifood fair as part of Los Cedros group from Ocampo, Michoacán and told us it “represented a great opportunity for her and all the group.” She told us at the beginning of the event she was doubtful about selling her product but was empowered by the knowledge about her products. She said “Thanks to this process now I sell cilantro, lettuce, and chard. I see that more families value our work and obtain extra income which motivates me to continue. This road will require effort and dedication and now I realize that all I have learned contributes real benefits that benefit my family’s health and that of the community.”
Today is Giving Tuesday, a day when individuals that encourages people to do good. As an MBF supporter you can join the global community and hundreds of millions of people who are inspired to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity by donating to our cause.
Thank you for supporting MBF and sharing our commitment to the conservation of nature, the monarch butterflies and the wellbeing of the communities that host them during winter.
WE WISH YOU A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
