Summary

Matale village in North Eastern Tanzania has almost no surface water for 8 months of the year during the dry season. The community and local school relied on a small borehole, pumping water from 200m underground, but the diesel generator broke down a year ago and has not been replaced, forcing villagers to travel far in search of water. In this project we will upgrade the existing water pump to meet the growing community's water needs, and install a reliable, solar energy system to power it.

Challenge

Matale C village is in a Maasai region of North Eastern Tanzania where surface water is scarce for 8 months of the year. The community's only clean water source, a borehole next to the local primary school which pumps water from 200m underground, has broken down, and the community do not have the funds to repair it. The are being forced to walk several kilometres in search of water, which takes time away from other activities such as education, their livelihoods and impacts their health.

Solution

In this project, we will commission a pump test at the community's existing broken borehole to determine the maximum water flow rate that can be sustainably pumped out. We will then upgrade the existing pump to meet the water requirements of the community, and install a solar system to provide clean, reliable power, at a cost that is more affordable than what the community had been previously paying for diesel and the maintenance of their old, broken diesel genset.

Long-Term Impact

With these upgrades to their existing broken system, the community will have a reliable, local source of clean water, increasing the time they have available for other livelihood activities, and improving their health as waterborne diseases reduce from contaminated water usage. They will also save money from no longer needing to pay for diesel for water pumping, and be able to put funds towards other infrastructure improvements within the community, such as expanding water distribution.
