We are celebrating the 1st year since Pumalín and Liquiñe have been flying free! We are happy because our monitoring team has observed their social interaction with their peers, which is vital for their successful reinsertion into the wild.
Since their release on February 13, 2022, we have closely followed the areas they have occupied for their movements and resting through satellite monitoring. At first, the distances were short, as they were cautious in getting to know their new home, but as time went by, they gained confidence, increasing the extent of their flight paths in search of food.
The flying range of Liquiñe has been greater than Pumalin, possibly due to its confidence, the instinct to explore, and the stimulus to follow its peers. The food supply is also a relevant factor. A mixture of that and the individual character of each condor, some are shyer, and others a bit more daring.
We are so grateful to make this program possible in collaboration with CRARChile and Fundación Meri and to give a second chance to these two condors that would otherwise be in captivity. Their monitoring will continue until the GPS sign is over. The information will help us better understand this iconic bird's behavior, flight patterns, and general ecology.
Thank you for your support and for making this possible!
