Construccion del centro de acopio
By Sophie Birkett | Charitable Trust manager
![]()
Finalmente hemos comenzado la construcción de nuestro centro de acopio!! La comunidad está participando para lograr este gran desafío.
Finally we have started building the recycling centre! The community is helping to accomplish this great challenge.
After several years and numerous charity challenges, the building has finally begun. The community of Punta Allen Verde is heavily involved and through completion, it will become an example to the rest of the region. All the plastic, metal and glass collected will be sold thus gaining revenue to fund and maintain the recycling centre.
We are currently building compost containers with plastic bottles as can be seen from the photos. Volunteers were also involved in creating unique recyclable items for their Environmental Day Exhibition to show how such items can be used! A disco ball out of tetra-packs (milk cartons), beermats (coasters) out of bottle caps, magnets out of beer tops, key chains and jewellery out of water bottles and beer cans were just a few of the items created!
Thank you to all our supporters who have made this happen. We are very much in need of additional funds to continue the construction work on the centre.

Mini-challenge Mayathlon fundraising
By Sophie Birkett | Charitable Trust manager

The recycling centre is very basic at the moment and there is a lot of work still to be done to improve the centre and make it run more efficiently. To achieve this, more workers and materials are required and in order to raise the money some brave volunteers and staff members took part in the Mini-challenge Mayathlon on the 17th of March. The Triathlon consisted of a 750m swim, through a lagoon (avoiding the crocodiles), a 20km cycle and a 5km run.
Huge congratulations go to all Triathletes as everyone successfully completed the course and the total raised came to an impressive $1544, which will be put to good use improving Punta Allen’s recycling centre. The volunteer team beat the staff team in the run, but it was a close contest all the way through the swim and the cycle. Special congratulations to solo competitor, Peyton, who came sixth in his age group and 32ndoverall! The funds raised will go towards expanding and refining Punta Allen’s recycling centre so that it does even more for the community and the Sian Ka’an biosphere. Thank you to everyone who donates to this project, we are very much looking forward to showing in our next report how these funds are being spent.

Building materials for the Centre
By Sophie Birkett | Charitable Trust manager
![Under construction]()
Under construction
After the GVI Mexico team and volunteers joined the Maraton ecologico de la Riviera Maya back in October 2012, to pay for construction material transportation and to continue building the Punta Allen recycling centre, we have finally raised more funds to continue building the centre.
Community members in Punta Allen, situated within the UNESCO Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, wish to create and build a recycling centre where the recyclable waste can be temporarily stored once separated. With a new person from town in charge of the centre, the recycling centre is continuing to work with collecting the plastic from Punta Allen and is also focusing on making compost. In moving forward with the construction, right now the building material is been bought to start again this month. So keep watching this space to see the new developments on this story.
