In Puerto Rico, 31% of housing units are rentals, yet tenants' rights are far from guaranteed. Families face insecure housing conditions, exploitation, forced evictions, illegal rent increases, and even sexual harassment and violence. Vulnerable tenants are often discriminated against based on race, sex, survivor status of domestic violence, family composition, or national origin. Legal action is urgent to defend their right to stay and live in safety.
In Puerto Rico, 31% of housing is rented, yet tenants often have no protection against eviction, exploitation, or discrimination. Women, children, elders, immigrants, and other marginalized groups are hit hardest, as myths and policies leave renters vulnerable. Without legal awareness and support, families risk losing their homes and their dignity. Moreover, they are unable to demand just actions inside and outside of courts.
Since 2020, Alquileres Dignos has empowered renters across Puerto Rico through legal education, advocacy, and court support. We provide workshops, materials, and community brigades to teach tenants their rights, while also representing families at risk of eviction-addressing the fact that over 94% of renters face court without legal help. By combining community education with direct legal support, we help tenants protect their homes and live with dignity.
We envision a Puerto Rico where every tenant knows their right to safe, dignified housing and can confidently defend their home. Access to justice should never depend on income or living situation-it is a fundamental tool to protect families and communities. Your support helps make this vision a reality.
