In February of 2025, Born Free USA received an urgent call from the owner of a monkey, desperate to rehome him. The small Rhesus macaque, Wally, had bitten one of his owners and ripped off half of her ear. Within days, Wally had been brought to the sanctuary and was settling into his new life.
Wally’s rescue provided an important and timely reminder that the trade in primates as pets in the United States must be stopped – not just for animal welfare reasons, but also to keep people safe. The only way to effectively achieve this would be by the introduction of a nationwide ban.
Born Free USA has been instrumental in the campaign to see the Captive Primate Safety Act passed into law. The bill would ban private ownership of primates like Wally and protect humans from being seriously hurt by these wild animals. The bill was reintroduced into both chambers of the U.S. Congress – the House and the Senate – on May 5th, 2025, by Congressman Mike Quigley and Senator Richard Blumenthal. Just a few days later, we welcomed Congressman Quigley to our sanctuary in South Texas to allow him to learn the stories of some of our rescued monkeys – providing important context to the need for the law.
Visibly moved by the stories he heard, Congressman Quigley told us that his visit renewed his commitment to see the ban passed. Building on this momentum, some of the Born Free USA team travelled to Washington DC the following week to meet with members of Congress to encourage them to support the bill. A resounding success, the busy few days led to multiple new bill cosponsors.
The campaign to end the primate pet trade in the United States is far from won. The bill needs to go through multiple stages to become law: the committee stage, then votes in both chambers of Congress. Our team will continue to keep the pressure up to see this important initiative succeed.
In the meantime, we will continue to rescue monkeys in need like Wally, who is thriving under our care. Now living with another monkey and beginning the process of widening his friendship group, Wally is one of the lucky ones. Your support today will provide monkeys like Wally a second chance and contribute to the fight to end the cruel pet trade in these precious individuals.
