Book Bloom Project – Donor Impact Report

Presented by Tarana Foundation Date: August 2025

Introduction

The Book Bloom Project marks the first initiative launched under this project on an education-focused mission to support children from marginalized communities. This foundational project aims to address not only literacy gaps but also broader educational needs in underserved schools across the Colombo District.

Project Overview

The Book Bloom Project is a flagship initiative under the Tarana Foundation’s mission to uplift education in 5 underserved primary schools in the Colombo District. This one-year program focuses on cultivating a strong reading culture among students in marginalized communities by enhancing access to quality books and organizing engaging reading activities.

Project Objectives

  • Promote the reading habit among students in five underprivileged primary schools in the Colombo District, where children come from marginalized backgrounds.

  • Support broader educational needs by providing access to books, learning materials, and volunteer-led engagement.

  • Equip school libraries with age-appropriate books and educational materials to support sustained reading engagement throughout the year.

  • Foster a love for reading through storytelling and reading sessions conducted periodically by dedicated volunteers.

  • Bridge the educational gap between resource-rich and underserved schools in the Colombo District by cultivating reading habits—a foundational step toward academic success and exam readiness.

Schools Reached

This initiative will be launched in five carefully selected primary schools based on need assessments and community engagement. It has been launched in two primary schools, and the remaining three primary schools are targeted to be completed by the end of September. Each school will receive tailored support to ensure maximum impact.

 What We've Delivered

  • Over 500 books were distributed across the two schools

  • Library corners established or upgraded in each school

  • Teacher engagement to integrate reading into classroom activities

  • Reading kits (including books, bookmarks, and journals) were given to 180 primary school students in 2 schools
  • Volunteers conduct monthly reading sessions and storytelling events

Heartfelt Gratitude

A special thank you goes out to Anand & Tammy for their extraordinary generosity in launching this fund on GlobalGiving in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary.

Instead of receiving gifts, they chose to channel the goodwill of their friends and family toward supporting underserved children in Sri Lanka—a gesture that speaks volumes of their compassion and vision.

We wish Anand & Tammy an abundance of health, happiness, and prosperity, and may their noble aspirations continue to blossom and inspire others.

Your support has helped us launch a movement—one that begins with a book and grows into a lifelong journey of learning. We are deeply grateful for your belief in our mission and in the potential of every child.

Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning. We are committed to continuing with future initiatives that support children from rural and underserved communities—not only in their education, but also in meeting other essential needs that help them thrive. Together, we are planting seeds of opportunity that will grow for generations.

Thank you for your kind generosity. Your compassion and support are deeply appreciated. May you and your family be blessed abundantly with joy, health, and prosperity.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Suranjani Wickremeratne
