Roots & Roads: Maya Midwifery Mobile Clinic Operations is a collaborative program of Maya Midwifery International (MMI) and Naye Xjaw designed to expand community-based, culturally grounded sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (SRMNCH) services in the Maya Mam region of Guatemala. Through monthly mobile clinics, on-site community midwife trainings, and strengthened referral pathways, the program reaches remote communities with limited access to the formal health system.
In rural Maya Guatemala, high rates of preventable maternal and infant mortality/ morbidity are exacerbated by excessive inequalities, high cost of perinatal care, lack of reliable transport, long distances to health facilities, and lack of quality, compassionate, women-centered, culturally appropriate care.
Roots & Roads mobile clinics expand access to high-quality, culturally grounded SRMNCH services in remote Maya Mam communities, increasing early antenatal care, postpartum follow-up, and preventive health services for women and families. Community midwives gain strengthened clinical skills, improved confidence, and clearer referral pathways that enhance the safety and quality of care they provide.
The program addresses root causes by strengthening Indigenous-led health systems rather than providing temporary or one-time services. By centering Maya midwives, building their clinical capacity, and expanding culturally grounded SRMNCH care, the program tackles long-standing barriers to respectful, community-based maternal health services. Mobile clinics ensure consistent access to essential care in communities historically excluded from the formal health system.
