Sometimes, the most powerful moments in sport happen far from stadium lights.
They happen on muddy fields, at sunrise training sessions, and in the determined eyes of young athletes who dream of becoming more than what their circumstances seem to predict.
The Academy is Romania’s firstever fully professional youth rugby development structure—a national effort that reaches teenagers aged 14–19 from 27 clubs across 11 counties, with a mission to rebuild the country’s rugby culture from the ground up.
This season alone, 683 young players are part of the journey, learning what it means to train like professionals and dream like champions.
During the first international expert visit—delivered with support from our partners at Stade Toulousain—we saw 290 young players step onto the field, many of them for the first time under professional-level supervision.
Some arrived nervous, unsure if they were “good enough.”
All of them left with pride.
One 15yearold from a rural club told us:
“It feels like someone finally sees us. Like rugby isn’t just for the big cities… it’s for kids like me too.”
These training camps brought players from all corners of the country together, including those who had represented Romania at the U20 European Championship. Watching younger players train beside national-level athletes lit a spark that no classroom could replicate.
A strong rugby nation is built not only on athletes, but on the adults who guide them.
That’s why the Academy invested heavily in coach development:
These coaches will shape the next decade of Romanian rugby.
Communities Coming Alive
Beyond training, rugby created moments of joy and unity in towns where opportunities for young people are often scarce.
We hosted four major community events, including the Gala Sportivilor in Cristian and the Gala Rugby-ului Humorean, bringing together families, local supporters, and youth teams.
These gatherings celebrated not only performance—but belonging.
As with any growing national project, we faced challenges.
The biggest was the delayed delivery of equipment, especially rugby balls, which can only be purchased from accredited suppliers. This slowed some training sessions, but coaches adapted creatively—sharing materials, restructuring drills, and sourcing temporary balls locally.
Another challenge was uneven engagement across regions—some clubs were overmotivated, others hesitant. This taught us the importance of clearer communication and early preregistration for future expert visits.
Every challenge made the project stronger.
Between 19–29 March 2026, the second expert visit is planned to bring more international coaching, more player development, and more opportunities for young athletes nationwide.
The Romanian Rugby Union will soon announce final details and open registration for hosting clubs.
The momentum is growing—and so is the dream.
