Life for at-risk unborn babies in Pakistan

The Medicare Health Foundation is deeply committed to improving maternal and neonatal health in Pakistan, one of the countries facing alarming rates of maternal and infant mortality. With your generous support, we aim to continue our mission to save the lives of precious newborn and unborn babies, ensuring that they have a healthy start to life. This report highlights the ongoing efforts, progress, and challenges faced by our foundation in addressing this critical issue.

Pakistan has one of the highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates in South Asia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 22,000 newborns die every year, and many others face lifelong disabilities due to preventable causes. The most common causes of neonatal mortality include:

• Premature birth
• Infections
• Birth asphyxia (lack of oxygen at birth)
• Complications during childbirth

Additionally, there is a significant shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, especially in rural areas, and limited access to quality healthcare services for pregnant women and newborns. The situation is compounded by a lack of awareness, inadequate facilities, and poor infrastructure, resulting in many families losing their loved ones.

Our project focuses on two major areas:

1. Saving Newborn Lives
   The foundation runs neonatal care units equipped with essential life-saving equipment, such as incubators and ventilators, in under-resourced hospitals. These units provide critical care for premature and sick babies and help reduce the neonatal mortality rate.

2. Maternal Health and Awareness
   We conduct awareness campaigns and provide training for healthcare workers on maternal health, including the importance of prenatal care, safe deliveries, and early identification of complications. We also ensure that expecting mothers in remote areas receive medical check-ups and transportation to hospitals for safe deliveries.
