By RUTH SOLEDAD BUSTAMANTE MAMANI | THE CHALLENGE - MORE TREES
Dear donors,
In recent months, we have been working on the restoration of degraded lands and the eradication of poverty. The project is designed to benefit over 4,000 families and restore approximately 1,900 hectares of degraded soil each year for a period of about seven consecutive years.
The geographical scope of implementation covers 35 rural communities located in the districts of Huanoquite, Omacha, Accha, Ccapi, and Ccapacmarca, in the Cusco region of Peru.
We are currently in the third year of implementation. We recently completed our second reforestation campaign (2024), successfully planting approximately 2,000 hectares. There is still a long road ahead, with much to learn alongside the participating communities and local governments.
We continue to affirm that the future of the planet lies in the hands of family farmers.
The main goal of the MÁS ÁRBOLES project is to restore 13,300 hectares and establish 1,330 hectares under conservation.
Active community participation is essential to achieving the project’s goals, as their knowledge of the land, commitment, and ownership of the process ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of the actions taken.
This project brings environmental, economic, and social benefits to rural communities.
Analyzing the degraded ecosystem requires thorough research and action. The evaluation strategy we have implemented includes the following steps:
Mapping and identification of degraded areas within the communities
Diagnosis and selection of the Pachamama Raymi Methodology
Identification of the reference ecosystem
Consultation with local stakeholders
The project is aligned with ten Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 1: No Poverty
SDG 2: Zero Hunger
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
SDG 5: Gender Equality
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
SDG 13: Climate Action
SDG 15: Life on Land
SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
MAIN OBJECTIVE:
To achieve prosperity for rural families and the recovery of natural resources through the establishment of forest plantations that generate ecosystem goods and services for the benefit of farming families and communities.
We are currently in full production for the 2025 reforestation campaign. We have established 11 nurseries in various districts, with a total production capacity of 2 million trees. This phase is crucial to ensure the continuity of the project and the success of our ecological restoration efforts.
Restoring eroded soils is not only possible—it is essential. While it is more complex than intervening in earlier stages, the social, environmental, and economic benefits of rehabilitating degraded lands make it a smart and necessary investment. By supporting this effort, you are not only helping to heal the Earth but also empowering communities, protecting biodiversity, and building a more sustainable future. Every contribution creates a real and lasting impact.
Our project also includes the restoration of vulnerable areas, prioritized based on the needs and criteria defined by the communities themselves. To date, we have restored 627 hectares of remnant forests in two communities. In the coming months, we will work with participants to assess additional areas for conservation and restoration, ensuring that actions are relevant, sustainable, and aligned with the project’s goals.
Our next steps:
Monitor the established plantations: plant survival and growth
Forest plantation certification
Generate economic income for communities through carbon credit sales
Strengthen community capacities in management and organization
Thank you for your generosity and continued support. Together, we are building a better future.
Help us by donating to “Planting Prosperity”!
Blessings,
The Pachamama Raymi Team
