In Nepal this is the rainy season starts from July to October for this quarter. The victim families are in difficult situation for maintaining livelihood and day to day live because of heavy rain fall causing flooding and disaster too in this period. However, the flood affected victim families have demanded and interest for long run income generation opportunities. For this baseline assessment have been carried out by MRC Nepal for the possible income generation opportunity. Based on finding, technical feasibility, need, demand and interest of the farmer, off season vegetable production technology is the best option for increasing income and better livelihood of the victim families in this areas. There is no other better option as the vegetable gives good income in shortest period time. The areas are much favorable for vegetable production as there are fertile land and irrigation for vegetable production. In this areas mostly the women farmer are organized into groups in an institutional manner so that a viable community based women organization (CBWO) have been established which is faciliated by MRC Nepal. In such senarios whole activities are powered by women.
Considering this situation, MRC Nepal support seed capital to give seed of vegetable which are market potential. Along with this MRC Nepal support production materials, domestic pesticide preparation technology for organic vegetable production, capacity building training and technical backstopping support. As a result the victim families are able to produce vegetable and sell in the market. They received good income average NRs 20,000 from 336 sqm of land. They are very happy with this income. Not only selling vegetable but also they consumed organic fresh vegetable meeting kitchen requirement. They are able to improve health status by consuming protein and mineral rich vegetable. In Nepal the poorest of the poor families grow vegetable as they are rich sources of vitamin, protein and mineral. Also vegetable gives better productivity of land. The vegetable enterprises also create local employment and able to improved social development of the poor families. Along with this domestic violence in the families have been declined so that peace building created in the society.
At the end victim families thanked to GlobalGiving Team and MRC Nepal Team for getting such genuine support for improving livelihood of the victim families.
