Telangana Mass Dog Killings: 1,600 Lives Lost
Over the past months, Telangana, India witnessed one of the most horrifying acts of animal cruelty in recent history.
An estimated 1,600 stray dogs were brutally killed across multiple villages. These were not humane interventions. Dogs were poisoned, beaten, dragged, and disposed of like waste. Many died slow, painful deaths. Puppies were not spared. Nursing mothers were not spared.
The killings were justified as a response to fear of dog bites and rabies—but mass culling is illegal under Indian law and has been repeatedly proven ineffective. It does not solve overpopulation. It does not stop rabies. It only creates a temporary vacuum that leads to more breeding and migration.
The brutality was so severe that it made international headlines, drawing outrage from animal welfare groups around the world.
But while the world watched in shock, we took action.
SAFI’s Legal Intervention
We refused to let 1,600 deaths go unanswered.
Filed 8 FIRs (First Information Reports) against individuals and authorities responsible for orchestrating the killings.
Filed 2 WRIT Petitions in the Telangana High Court demanding:
A permanent ban on illegal mass killings of stray dogs
Strict enforcement of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules
Mandatory establishment of Animal Birth Control centers in every village
Accountability for officials who permitted or ignored the killings
This is not just about justice for the 1,600 dogs who died.
This is about systemic change.
If we can secure court-mandated ABC implementation across villages, we can replace cruelty with science-based population control. We can reduce fear through vaccination and sterilization—not violence.
The Real Solution: Sterilization, Not Slaughter
Mass killings happen when communities are afraid and governments fail to implement proper sterilization programs.
Spay/neuter is the only long-term, humane, and legally approved solution.
When you donate to our sterilization project, you are helping prevent:
Future culling
Rabies outbreaks
Human-animal conflict
Cycles of fear and violence
You are helping ensure that what happened in Telangana never happens again.
Stand With Us
1,600 dogs lost their lives.
We cannot bring them back.
But we can fight to make sure they are the last.
Please donate to our sterilization and cruelty prevention work.
Please share our project.
Please help us replace brutality with compassion.
Together, we can end the cycle.
Here are some news articles from top outlets about our work on these killings.
